COVID-19

If you were on a real network rather than Anklegrabber T&T you’d know 5G’s great. I have a T-Mobile 5G wireless widget for home internet and it’s faster than a fast ferret in a forest fire.

So, if your home is wired by Comcast, can you use the T-Mobile home internet?

If T-Mobile 5G is available where you are, yes, you can use it independently of anything else that may be going on.

You can check your address on their site, obviously, and if you’re eligible and for whatever reason unhappy with what you have, I recommend it highly, or I’d better say that I have been very, very pleasantly surprised with it. It’s $50 a month, no contract, no deposit, they send you the widget, you turn it on and make it obey you, a process that takes a few minutes, and then you suddenly have very fast wifi coverage throughout the entire manor.

I mean, I don’t know if it’s fast enough for Limey’s TIE fighter flight simulator, but for my I think relatively demanding usage, it’s been amazingly solid. I did not expect to lean on this as a primary bandwidth source, and it certainly never occurred to me that it might serve as a single bandwidth source, but it does, easily.

AT&T 5G has been pretty solid for me. I was somewhere in Austin recently and happened to notice that my phone had wandered onto AT&T’s mmWave network (which they call “5G+”) for the first time. I ran a speed test and it was faster than regular 5G, albeit not nearly as fast as advertised.

I don’t remember if you’re on iPhone or Android these days, but at least on iPhone you can force it to use 4G LTE only.

I went back to iPhone, once they went back to offering one slightly smaller than a rodeo championship beltbuckle. And I’m mostly joking about 5G (5G E?). It’s good when I get it, just it’s spotty in places, including downtown Houston.

AT&T 5GE is basically just 4G LTE. Gotta love their branding.

SONOFABITCH!

Those rat bastards have been lying to me for years. I toggle on “5G only”, it goes to 5GE…I switch to “LTE Only”, it goes to 5GE. As far as I know, the real 5G doesn’t even exist.

Their lawyers will be contacting Waldo shortly.

Oh, lawyers have already been involved.

So while they’ve pulled all marketing references to 5GE, that misleading icon on your iPhone has survived.

The issue I had was Comcast’s woeful upload speed. If you’re using a VPN to WFH, then you’re SOL with 5mb/s upload cap. I could buy up to 1gb/s download speed, but upload was fixed.

If 5G gives equal speeds up and down, or at least better than snail mail speeds up, then it would work for me. AT&T provide 1gb/s both ways plus HBO Max for $70/month including fees and taxes.

We got a notice this morning from the USPS that we would receive our covid test today! In November when I posted about ordering them, I said I expected to receive them in March. The government beat my expectations!

Of course I still don’t have them yet.

In other news, Charles has been seen recently licking door knobs around the Queen’s chambers.

What are the odds that she’ll outlive him? Can one place such a bet?

I get the feeling that she wants to outlive him just for spite.

I do believe in the UK you can place a bet on anything at the convenient betting shop right in your neighborhood. They’re everywhere, although I think Ireland wins. In Ireland 4 things make a town a town: a church, a Mary shrine, a pub and a betting shop.

The answer is yes.

No further context needed.

But what are the odds?

Meanwhile, back at he plague:

The downward trend from the Omicron wave is now well established. The data clearly shows Omicron displaced Delta and almost every state is in a significant downward trend for case numbers and nationally, fatalities have reduced from over 2600 daily in late January to under 1800 yesterday for the 7DMA. It is good news almost across the board. Almost.

Something is odd in Maine. While numbers everywhere else have fallen, Main’s numbers have gone through the roof during the last week. They had been at a persistently high, but not “Omicron high” level for a long time so it may just be that they are late to the Omicron game. Still, Maine’s curve looks different and most interesting, fatalities have shot up coincident with case numbers, instead of lagging as in every other case. None of this is happening in New Hampshire or Massachusetts, so it’s a little weird and I’m going to keep an eye on it.

Stephen King taught me that all the weird shit happens in Maine.

Just go 10 miles inland from the coast of Maine and you are in a completely different and terrifying world.
