Good news: BoJo moved out of the ICU.

Re-infection would be troubling! This report states that some believe it could be a problem with inconsistent testing. Bloomberg article…

Fear of re-infection in recovered patients is also growing in China, where the virus first emerged last December, after reports that some tested positive again – and even died from the disease – after supposedly recovering and leaving hospital. There’s little understanding of why this happens, although some believe that the problem may lie in inconsistencies in test results.

He is reportedly coherent and able to make decisions, which would make this the first case of the virus improving someone’s condition.

Zing!

This is awesome (I believe this is new hospitalizations per day):

Definitely good news and I’m not trying to rain on the parade here but today was the first day in 52 days that there were no new infections in Daegu. The peak there passed a month ago and it still takes awhile to reach zero infections. Now, Daegu is a city of about 3 million people, the fourth largest in Korea but Korea is roughly the size of Indiana. Some areas went pretty much untouched by the virus. America on the other hand is experiencing a rolling wave across a much larger space which will take much longer to contain and get to a zero infection rate. I’m thinking it won’t be August or September until that happens. Also we had a few flare ups and scares in Seoul despite it being a fortress for the most part. The authorities acted fast and were able to keep the numbers low and the numbers dropped again. I don’t expect most authorities in America to act in a similar fashion and we’re still not out of the woods here. People are returning from abroad and not sticking to self-quarantine recommendations but instead are travelling domestically and spending a lot of time in public. How countries deal with these sudden pockets popping up will be key.

Boris Johnson’s father Stanley tells @BBCr4today that the PM now needs to rest & that becoming ill has “served an amazing purpose in that it’s got the whole country to realise this is a serious event”.

Lots of interesting things going on in this German scientific study.

They tested 80% of a small town that had a COVID-19 outbreak and found 14% actually had been infected and the death rate was about 4x the flu. You can interpret the results as either good (for instance they didn’t find the virus hanging out on surfaces in an infectious form) or bad (hanging out with big groups of people is bad and it’s going to take forever for populations to get immunity).

Every time I read about Boris and his father I’m reminded of Monty Python’s “Upper Class Twit of the Year” sketch.

Wow. His father must be a real asshole to want his son to get sick just to prove a point to the world. Eh? Oh.

A generous gift indeed, but I wonder what is the PT payroll for one home game, how far the $190K would go.

Whoops, wrong thread!

States are now banding together to coordinate their pandemic response, including policy and procurement; notably on the West Coast and in the North East which have been the hardest hit (so far).

If only there was some organization that had the ability to coordinate the policy and procurement for all states. Eh? Oh.

It is both good they’re doing it and disgraceful that they have to.

Just staggering numbers in the US yesterday:

  • 26,000 new cases pushed us comfortably through 600,000 - nearly 4x the next nearest country (Spain at 175,000).
  • 2400 people died. That’s actual people. Two dying every minute, of every hour, of the whole day.
  • Now over 26,000 total deaths in the US, which is one fifth of the World total.

Worldwide there’s over 2 million cases and 130,000 deaths.

but how many die from the flu??

Half as many over 6x the time.

But’s only old people or people with pre-existing conditions. Hey, that’s a boon for the insurance companies.
