Correa Re-Signing: Will He or Won't He?

Agreed, HH. My slide rule is broken, and I wish Correa did not have such a high opinion of himself, but it seems he does.

We can agree to disagree. We are each entitled to our opinion.

However, Xander was nowhere near the player 2 years ago that he is now and there is no way he agrees to that deal if presented to him today ( IMO)

Bogaerts contract only shows what he and the Red Sox thought his value was on April 1, 2019.

Correa is probably going to get $25 million. The Astros are looking at 7/$175 or 8/$200, in my opinion to sign Correa. 6/$120 is just negotiating. If that’s the Astros “best and final offer” then I would pretty much agree with Carlos that it wasn’t close. Xander Bogaertz if had not signed his deal would have been a free agent with his representation probably using Manny Machado as their comp at $30 million a year. If the Astros dont sign Correa and he has a big year thats also likely to happen here too.

Don’t know if you’re being intentionally obtuse or what, but…market value is not derived in a vacuum. It’s not like every negotiation starts from zero and the two sides organically determine value.

It’s just reality. You’re saying that Carlos Correa shouldnt make more than Bogaertz because Bogaertz is better. But Bogaertz is making $20 million right now and not $25 or $27 only because thats what he could get on the specific date that he agreed to that deal, not what his perceived ability is now.

I would think that the 6 years on the contract is the main issue that Correa likely had. He’s probably going to try to hold out for at least a 10 year deal like some of the ridiculous contracts that players like Harper, Cole and Machado got. Especially since he made the comment that he wanted to be an “Astro for life.” I just don’t see Houston doing that nor do I even see them extending on out to 8. Without the number of years he wants, I’m guessing the dollar amount per year is a moot point. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong.

I’m saying “market value” is very much influenced by what similar players make. Correa can think he’s worth $100MM/season, but that doesn’t mean that’s a fair value to pay for him. It’s like the value of your house…no matter how much it’s worth to you, the market value is driven by how much your neighbor sold his house for. Correa is simply not worth twice what Bogaerts is. Not in my universe, anyway.

I completely agree with you that Correa is not Worth twice what Bogaerts is worth.

But Bogaerts is worth more than he was worth 2 years ago.

And every year changes the market.

Is Carlos worth more than Chris Davis? 7yrs $161 mil.

Miguel Cabrera? 8yrs $248 mil.
Joey Votto? 10yrs $225
Pujols? 10 yrs $240.

And my personal favorite: Jason Heyward with the same exact 8yr $184mil that I suggested earlier.

You view the “market” for your house in exactly the same way, by looking at the transactions (like your neighbors house that sold). And those transactions are specific to a certain point in time.

What I’m saying is that Xander Bogaerts is basically the house your neighbor bought two years ago and then added on a pool and a master suite. After that, if you’re still going around saying “my neighbors house is only worth what he paid two years ago” you’d be wrong.

I don’t think the Astros are going to give anybody an 8- or 10- year contract (or maybe even 6 years). And I don’t think they should; that’s a long time during which many things could go wrong.

I bet he qualifies for a helluva equity line.

Except that the cost of Bogaerts hasn’t increased. He’s still getting paid $20MM/season. It’s not like because gotten better his price has gone up. In 2021, Bogaerts is worth $20MM. He will be worth $20MM in 2024. You didn’t pay for him all at once. It wasn’t a point of sale purchase for his value at one particular moment in time.

If you think Correa should be paid more than that, fine. I don’t. But to suggest because it’s two years later, Bogaerts is somehow now being underpaid, you’d be wrong.

No he’s not.

His value today might have increased if there were a pending transaction, but his worth is still $20 million.

So nobody is worth more than they are paid?

Is Yordan only worth $607,000?

Are you worth more than you are paid?

Yordan is not a free agent. Apples and chainsaws.

I’m shocked I’m paid as much as I am.

If they only knew how far their money doesn’t go.
