Correa Re-Signing: Will He or Won't He?

Yep. The Lindor deal just became the minimum.

I really like this Jeremy Pena guy.

So we have to assume that the Rangers offered Carlos at least 10/325 and he very politely told them to gft, right?

You would think so. But the Rangers lost 100 games last year. Maybe he did not want to be a part of that? It’s going to take a lot more than a couple of players to turn that team around.

I guess the floor is 10/$350,000,000 after the Seager signing. Here’s the thing. Astros SP is now Verlander, McCullers, Garcia, Urquidy, Odirizzi/Javier. I think Verlander makes that an exceptional rotation. The BP is Pressley, Neris, Stankek, Maton + a ton of good young arms. Needs nothing else, particularly with a healthy Blake Taylor for lefties and a healthy Josh James for length.

The IF with Correa returning remains the best in baseball - particularly when Bregman gets both his power and his legs back this offseason.

We have the best DH in baseball.

No doubt we needed a healthy Meyers, but Brantley and Tucker are great on the corners and McCormick/Siri could only be better in year 2.

I’m still on the pay Correa whatever he needs bandwagon. We have the space - particularly now that Marte and Comforto are off the market.

Baez and Story will come a little cheaper, but they both will be in the 200s now with Seager and Semien deals in place.

Carlos just became the best option on a very small chess board.

Did I miss something??? Where is Framber in your rotation?

If Odorizzi is in the rotation again, I’m gonna have to start breaking shit.

Start??

The Rangers and Mets have messed up the prices for free agent contracts and the going rate for elite shortstops. Lovely.

I have a hard time seeing Odorizzi on this team in 2022, unless McCullers’ forearm has not healed or Urquidy continues to have shoulder problems. The Astros have other options to be long relievers or spot starters, and Odorizzi could make an extra 6.75M (14.75M total) in incentives depending on innings pitched.

I agree.

If I’m Odorizzi I’m asking for a trade.

Click has stated that the plan is for Javier to be a starter, the bullpen experiment is over.

That makes Jake the #7 starter and his salary is based off of IP incentives.

I’m sure he wants at least a chance at 160IP BADLY and no chance to get them here without multiple injuries to multiple SP.

He is a proven veteran back of the rotation starter who is reasonably affordable in this market.

There have to be teams that could use him - Texas and LA Angels come to mind immediately.

Detroit is close to signing Baez not Correa.

Trade him to another Division team?

Ironic that every team is spending like drunken sailors except the pirates.

How many teams actually need a good/great shortstop anymore? The market has to be thinning….

Obviously that’s not ideal, Jim.

But I think he should be traded and will want to be traded ( haven’t heard or read anything, just trying to apply logic).

Those were just the 2 teams that came to mind that have an obvious need and feel like he would be a fit for.

The fact that they are division rivals is unfortunate and maybe a result of my knowing more about those teams.

Even with Texas signing 2 of the shortstops, the market must be getting tight.

With as nasty as the fan bases ( and some players) are, I simply refuse to think he will go to the Yankees or Dodgers. If so I would lose huge respect for him.

Maybe it’s time for Carlos to take a 2 year, $80 mil contract with the Astros and try again as a 29 year old with much less competition ( looks like Turner, and Bogaerts next year)

Semien got 7/$175mil as a 31 year old.

Factoring in age, lack of competition, historical comps, and inflation, he could get 8/$280 easily.

That is 10/$360 between the 2 contracts.

Jim,
That Seager deal sets the floor at 10/325. And while we all know that Houston is a major market - historically we don’t spend that way. Unfortunately, the Dodgers and Yankees do. I have no idea if ‘chemistry and fit’ in a clubhouse is a real thing - or if once on the roster - the guy is now ‘our guy’ and all previous ‘sins’ are forgiven. But this is certainly setting up as a test case.

Dodgers don’t truly need him with Turner already there. Yankees need him, if only to put a stake in our hearts - unless they choose to go Story for $100 million less. Tiger and Phillies both want and need.
Story, Baez Correa. Four teams in need. Three guys in play. Jorge Polanco anyone? Anyone?
