Baez seems like a dick, and I’ve got to think that he’s not great for team chemistry. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for the Tigers, and signing Baez would disappoint me. And I know that avoiding my disappointment is everybody’s highest priority.

Based on various dickish antics with the Cubs (e.g., home run poses, home run “trots”) and his overall behavior with the Mets last year. I’m aware that I may be in “get off my lawn” territory here, but I don’t care for the way he behaves.

I’ve never been a fan of that when Correa does it, but it’s not as bad as when crossing home plate, Baez gave his fans the thumbs down.
Rays give Wander Franco 11 years at $182MM.
Based on his early results, that seems like it will be quite a bargain for the Rays.

I sincerely doubt it. There are too many good options at SS (Baez, Seager, Taylor and Story) and too many other elite hitters available (Freddie Freeman and Kris Bryant) in this free agent class.
Teams have leverage they lacked when Harper and Machado were free agents.
It takes the Rangers out of the Correa sweepstakes, which is a good thing. They were a wildcard that might have offered Correa the 300/10 deal he hopes to receive.

Things change. MLB contracts and the requirements to keep or obtain a superstar are not what they were 5 years ago. Ordered 2 years ago.
The Astros can’t keep saying “our philosophy is that we do not do XXX” when every other team does. Not and stay competitive. Not and keep the fans happy.
Padres, Dodgers, Rays, Phillies, Mets, Yankees, and Angels have all signed players to 9+ year contracts in the past 2 years.
The Rangers just gave a 31 year old shortstop a 7 year deal.
No team can claim that they want to keep their superstar players and prioritize keeping them without offering 7+ years .
Make an offer in line with other teams or just admit to all the players and fans that superstars are not welcome here and they will keep a revolving door for a roster.
