For varying definitions of “high”
I was wondering the other day whether or not “high” and “reefer” are etymologically connected pot words.
Should add “singleton” to that list.
According to the ZZ Top song you can get high on Thunderbird wine. So I wouldn’t say getting high was exclusive to pot.
You’re right: “high” way preceded pot. Was it maybe nicknamed “reefer” because it got you as high as one who reefed sails? Or where the fuck did “reefer” come from?
Update: I just did a cursory check, and the sailing thing has been posited, but apparently in the sense that a reefer rolled up the sails (like a joint). However, etymologists have no straight line on this reefer madness. Happily.
You can also get high on gettin’ by. It’s my stock in trade.
Yeah, “high” was an alcohol term for as long as I can remember.
Was it still used during Prohibition?

So this article today in the Seattle Times discussing the Mariners’ plans (they’ve got money to spend and apparently want one or more of the high profile FA infielders to fill needs at 2B and/or 3B) contained this tidbit:
While few experts believe Correa will get quite that much [referring to the Lindor deal], there is some thought he’s searching for at least an 8- to 9-year deal with an average of $30 million per season and an opt-out clause.
If that rumor about Correa is true, the Astros should be in the mix.
I admit my new glasses might be rose colored, but I am just starting to feel like maybe Correa does resign.
I know nothing out there has changed, but it’s how I’m starting to feel.
If he is willing to agree to 8 years with an opt out then there is more hope than last week.
Not that this means anything.
Anyone know what restaurant they were at?
Waffle House?
According to the Chron, they were at Tiny Boxwoods. Which doesn’t serve breakfast. So…I’m sure that’s significant.
I’m gonna need to know what they ordered to sort out my feelings on this.
Tiny Boxwoods has a terrific breakfast.
Huh. According to their website they don’t open until 11:00 and serve lunch and dinner.
Damn, I was just there a week ago. Should’ve waited and gotten the scoop.
By the way, the “Watercolor” dish is outstanding, especially on someone else’s dime.
They have a restaurant in Austin (near Seton on 35th). I didn’t know that.
