I was at that Sugar Bowl, and when Sam uttererd those words postgame in the Superdome, I knew the Longhorns were fucked.

Pete Thamel reporting that Colorado board of regents are meeting to accept an invitation to the Big 12.

ETA: Brett McMurphy reporting the same, saying it’s ā€œ98% doneā€

The Big 13. Is this the start of the final act for the PAC whatever, or just a Colorado thing?

To quote a former surgeon…

ā€œWe’re in the endgame now.ā€

The dominoes of the other corner schools going to the Big 12ish and Oregon/Washington caving their negotiating terms to the Big 10 will quickly follow.

Maybe. Good possibility that will happen, but I’d also say that it’s hardly a sure thing. Oregon and Washington would bolt for the Big 10 if an offer were on the table. There isn’t one and nothing I’ve seen suggests one is coming. UofA is the most likely candidate to head to the Big 12 (at least, they’ve been the most talked about amongst the so called ā€œfour cornerā€ schools after Colorado). However, they’re inextricably linked to tempe normal who’s shown no inclination to leave the PAC 12. And really, nor has the UofA if you want to be believe Robert Robbins, the school’s president.

Colorado leaving the P12 would be a gut punch and I certainly don’t know what dominoes would fall in the wake of that. I just know don’t know if its departure means the death knell for the conference.

Doesn’t somebody have to come along with Colorado?

That’s the great question. Seeing all sorts of wild ass speculation, especially from some of the UofA writers I follow on twitter - sorry, X(!!!) - that Arizona is on the way out, either Washington or Oregon is actively seeking to join the B12, or that UConn is the tag team partner.

To me, it comes down to what kind of deal George Kliavkoff presents to the remaining P12 schools, if he still can, and whether those dollars are enough to keep the remaining conference members together.

If there is a deal to be had and it’s in striking distance of the the B12 (near $30m), hard for me to see how the rest of the schools decide that’s not enough and leave. The increased travel costs alone would be more than the difference in annual revenue.

UConn would depress me if I were a big 12 fan. Sure, basketball, but they’re a wet noodle overall.

So is Colorado. From Pete Fiutak on Twitter (tbh, I didn’t realize the level of mediocrity):

12 years in Pac-12

58-94 overall, 27-76 in Pac-12

0 bowl wins

2 winning seasons, 1 was 2020

That isn’t mediocrity.

I never thought of it this way. I still remember those Big 8 and Big 12 teams from the 80s and 90s and assume they could return.

AZ used to have a great basketball program. Lute Olson and all.

Colorado, AZ, AZ State, Whoever, are going to be the whipping boys of whatever conference they end up in. But the checks will clear.

Arizona is still a very good basketball program.

Depends on if their coach is getting fired or not.

Please show that to one Cory Kennedy.

God damn straight.

Tommy Lloyd has been a superb hire for my alma mater/UA and is in no way being fired any time soon.
The BasketCats are in good hands moving forward.
