According the same article, the buyout isn’t the issue. Drops to $112k in June, which isn’t staggering these days. I wonder whether this is more about NIL $$ - or the lack thereof for UH baseball.
Also, JBM, Murray State was in the College World Series last year and has six straight 30 win seasons. I’d say that’s something special.
Heading into the tournament, here is how the preseason rankings held up:
Of the first 16 in the preseason rankings, 9 are hosting regionals.
UCLA -#1 overall seed
Texas - #6
Miss State - #14
Ga. Tech - #2
Auburn - # 4
North Carolina - #5
Georgia - #3
FSU #10
Florida #8
Four other host were ranked at the start of the season in at least one poll:
West Virginia - #16 seed overall
Southern Miss - #9
Oregon - #11
Texas A&M - #12
And there were three host teams who were not ranked to start the season:
Alabama - #7 Overall seed
Kansas - #15
Nebraska - #13
There were three teams who were average ranked in the top 16 preseason who didn’t make the tourney field:
Other teams who made at least one preseason ranking who didn’t make the field:
Vandy
Clemson
Arizona
There were two teams who were ranked higher than the host of the region they are playing in: Oregon State (#2 in Oregon regional) & Arkansas (#2 in the Kansas regional)
Deep sleeper pick - Jacksonville State - They are the 3 seed in the Southern Miss regional. They went 8-7 in Quad 1 games this year, including sweeping a home and away against Auburn. They won Conference USA , which most years gives you a 2 seed but not this year.
So, that’s four team who made the 2025 College World Series but missed the tournament entirely this season:
LSU
Louisville
Arizona
Murray State
Also, rumor is that Houston is focused on Will Davis from Lamar to be their new head coach. It’s Kendall Rogers from D1 Baseball reporting that, so take it for whatever it’s worth.
Some big upsets highlight the first day. UCLA, Auburn, Southern Miss and Florida State are having to play elimination games in front of their home fans today.
The Citadel has a guy wearing leather work gloves at the plate, said he can’t afford 6 pairs of $90 batting gloves a year and one of these are $7 and will last for months
I don’t really follow college baseball but I caught the first inning of Auburn and NC State. That Chase Fralick looks like a stud. He has to be a top draft prospect, right?
