College Baseball 2026

As college baseball kicks off this weekend, I thought it might be fun to see what the different pre-season polls think will happen. Below is a table with the Athletic, D1/ESPN, Baseball America, & USA Today Coaches preseason polls. They are sorted by average ranking of the 4 polls. The top 8 are who they think are likely to be in Omaha. There were 31 teams ranked with 13 coming from the SEC.

This reminds me of a certain team from last year, ranked preseason #1 by most polls, yet missed the post-season field of 64.

Moral: shit can go wrong, badly.

Texas Tech has fallen from the upper echelon in D1 baseball. There’s no money left for baseball but they are increasing the number of scholarships . The Big XII has fallen a great deal as well

Where’s Houston? Haven’t they had a pretty fair program in recent years? Looks like recent history might count for something.

Houston was picked 12th out if 14 in the preseason BigXII coaches poll. Looks like Houston is rebuilding. Texas Tech is 9th.

Horns apparently cleaned up in the portal, and last year’s closer is now the Friday starter.

Cougars just beat No. 21 Wake Forest 8-2. Rebuild is off to a good start.

This is exactly why I posted this. I expect the top 25 and the teams that make it to Omaha will be very different from this list.

Where’s Rice?

Ummm, projected 7th out of 9 teams in the AAC. Meanwhile where is UTSA might be the better question. They had a deep run last year and they are picked second in the AAC behind East Carolina and had the same # of first place votes.

UC Davis are the Aggies? Shouldn’t they be the Sommeliers or the Oenologists or something?

UC Davis is one of the best Ag Schools in the nation

I don’t doubt it, but I’ve always had the impression that their wider reputation is for viniculture.

I had no idea either.

Hudson’s brother-in-law has UTSA rolling.

They’re out of the gate strong, having out scored their opponents 43-10 so far.

The Viticulture and Enology program is the best in the country and one of the best in the world. Most of the folks out here in the wine industry have a degree from Davis.

Probably a better program than Abilene Christian or Baylor. All they could do is teach you how to turn wine into water.
