Coaching/Front Office Hires & Promotions 2023

I was going to post how Yuli has been underpaid compared to his teammates ( based on the small seeming contracts he had the past couple of years) and the Astros should give him a $5M contract to be the 1st guy off the bench.

I figured it was very likey to be a wash - not great but not bad value over a single season and a thank you.

Then I looked !!

Yuli did not have to play through MLB minimum wage pre arbitration salaries.

Astros position player salaries since 2017 (actual earnings) All players who have made $10M+

Altuve $99.794M
Brantley $54.556 M
Gurriel $54.100M
Reddick $43.815M
Bregman $37.853
Springer $35.678M
McCann $23.0M
Correa $21.198M
Beltran $16.0M
Maldonado $11.987M
A. Diaz $10.413M

I still would love Yuli to play his entire career as an Astro and hope something can be worked out.

But I no longer think Yuli was under paid vs his peers.

Congratulations on calibrating your previously uninformed opinion with actual facts. There’s not enough of that going around these days.

This looks to me like Correa was very underpaid.

Opinions?

My opinion is this is a useless exercise.

Thanks Jim.

Spring training can not get here soon enough.

They’re all underpaid.

Correa had ample opportunities to change that. It’s all on him.

Poor Carlos earned only $21 million to play baseball.

It feels very strange that George Springer and Carlos Correa would be so far apart as both are players who played from rookie through arbitration directly to free agency. Im guessing being hurt in 2019 and 2020 just killed Correas value in those last two arbitration years.

Springer also got 4 years of arbitration vs 3 for Correa

Might check your math or source. According to baseball-reference,

2017 $535.000
2018 $1,000,000
2019 $5,000,000
2020 $8,000,000
2021 $11,700,000

Now you’re going all Wobbley!

I’m disappointed that this list didn’t include the 10,500,000 the Astros paid to Jon Singleton in the deal where we screwed him so bad.

There is power in the union.

You’re comparing apples to chainsaws. Yeah, the Astros only paid Springer $35.678MM the last six years because another team paid him $53.333MM. And they only paid Beltrán $16MM because he only played one season. To list what they earned with the Astros without normalizing it in anyway is pointless, and trying to draw any meaningful conclusions is logically invalid.

Valdez will not pitch in the WBC after consultation with the Astros due to the heavy workload last season.

Smart decision in my opinion. All of the Astros’ arms need a break in my opinion. Can’t fault them for wanting to play, but I wish all our pitchers would sit this one out.

Actually he didn’t make his full salary in 2020

Only $2,962,963

Damn good thing the Salvation Army was aware of that. Saved him from abject poverty.

He was paid according the way the MLBPA collectively bargained. To be paid differently, he and the Astros would have to agree to another contract. I am sure conversations were had during his time with the Astros but sans an agreement, he got paid according to the contract that governed major league baseball.
