Coaching/Front Office Hires & Promotions 2023

When you’re a star, they let you do it.

Very not shocking for a porn actor in those days.

Maybe these days. I paid no attention to the time frame. He was found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial and now may be in a mental institution.

My understanding is that he was from the late 70s-early 80s. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m not looking it up.

He put the anal in analytics.

According to IMDB, he made his debut in 1978 and appeared in adult films as last as 2015. His heyday was the 80s and 90s.

I am not either. I never heard his name before today.

In the very early days of the interwebs we had a friendly email war with a guy from Oregon. One day we started calling him Beaver.

He emails us back and says “Do NOT do a web search called ‘pictures of beavers’”.

I introduced a customer of mine to an employee of mine the other day by saying: Jeremy? Ron. Ron? Jeremy. Then I felt weird.

Trying to figure out how we went from Bagwell and analytics to Ron Jeremy - this ranks up there with reviewing the Cubs home games and a quick U-turn into Mark Grace/slump-busting.

Not too long now until the season starts.

I was thinking about this today. ST is very near, and Yuli has not signed with any team. That does not bode well for his future, and he must be at least a little disbelieving.

You would think at the very least someone will eventually sign him to a minor league deal with the proverbial spring training invite. I still think it might be Minnesota.

But given his career history, it does seem a little puzzling that SOME TEAM hasn’t signed him. While I still think he picks at first with the best of them, the article about his status on MLB Trade Rumors referenced that his metrics at first base “cratered last season.” If true, perhaps that and his batting decline, not to mention the knee and his age, has teams looking for smarter investments??? Don’t know but it’s curious.

I just don’t think the Astros have a spot for him. If Houston keeps 13 position players then I think the final two spots come down to Meyers, Hensley and perhaps Matijevic….and then Yuli if you sign him. I don’t think his asking for $3M is the road block. I’m just wondering if Houston wants to go younger and more athletic off the bench.

No ifs, ands or butts about it?

Sorry, didn’t mean to be an ass.

I have no clue what that is, but my eyes said nothing about his defense “cratered.”

I don’t get to watch all the games, but it seemed to me his bat may have slowed. I did not see any indication his defense had diminished.

He was the AL batting champion in '21, and now he can’t find a job. Yuli has got to be shaking his head.

I have no idea what all goes in to that either, but I know some take it as gospel. FWIW, Yuli was a negative WAR last season and on the team only Goodrum, Mancini, Lee and Castro were worse. I guess that just means the moneyball folks don’t like him.

I think he can still be productive, but I’m afraid it’s not going to be in Houston.

His bat appeared very slow to me last year. Don’t know if there was something wrong, or if Father Time is just catching up. “Defensive metrics cratered”? That’s just absurd nonsense. I have no idea why he hasn’t signed, if it’s money, role, injury still in question, beer selection in the clubhouse…what. But I’d like to see him back in a utility role.

I think the hold up is a combination of the injury he suffered, his desire to start, and money. But mostly him wanting to start.

And I can respect that. But there doesn’t seem to be a lot of interest in him as a starter, at least not in combination with whatever the money part is.

Perhaps they see more 1b upside with Diaz in reserve, along with whatever he can or wants to contribute at catcher
