With a leadership change so clearly needed in baseball ops, I expected I’d feel better about this news when it came. Instead I’m just worried things are going to get worse.
4 GMs in 7 years, that does not scream successful organization. Whoever Crane hires next, he needs to give him some runway to make decisions. They need some stability at the top. Crane also needs to realize that it’s not 2019 anymore, a rebuild is here whether he wants to admit it or not.
What GM with other options would want this job right now? Meddling owner, high(read unrealistic) expectations, aging roster with a terrible farm, an unwillingness to sign long term deals.
I very much worry about the Astros future

The timing is this does seem odd.
Maybe things were getting uncordial.
What can a GM do post-deadline other than play with pieces already in the organization.

They had an incredible run of success, set up by Luhnow, maintained by Click and has been straight downhill since his firing. Maybe Brown is the reason, that’s possible, I’m not saying moving on from him is the wrong decision, it likely is the right one. But what other successful organization has chopped and changed at the top like this and continued to be successful? If Crane thinks that a new GM will come in and it will be like when Luhnow or Click was here, he’ll be looking for another new GM in 3 years

I almost could see Brown saying fuck it. You’re not going to re-sign me, I’m out of here. But that doesn’t seem to be his style, nor would it be a good look.

Once the decision is made that he won’t be back next year, there’s benefit to both parties getting a jump on it (Crane finding a new GM, Brown finding a new gig), especially with a very weird offseason coming. I’m sure they are both hoping to get things lined up before the lockout hits.
