MLB has uniform guidelines, including that players other than the catcher must wear their caps “facing forward”. At what point is it not facing forward? That is not defined, like a check swing or a pitcher stepping “directly towards” a base. The umpire absolutely has authority to tell a player to straighten his cap or hide/remove jewelry. This was a non issue and everyone had a chuckle until Marmol went out to argue a replay review. But I get it, the umpire should be fired, fined a gazillion dollars, and placed in the stocks and pelted with rocks and garbage. That’s not letting the kid play.

Eddings admitted that day there is no rule.
Hunter Goodman, who Eddings said complained about the hat, said he didn’t say anything about the hat.
MLB told Eddings he went to far (reportedly by unnamed sources) and Eddings said something to the pitcher as he went to the bullpen Saturday.
“Saturday’s gesture of apology by Doug on the field speaks for itself,” a league spokesperson told The Athletic .
Fernando Rodney was the first I remember wearing his hat with the bill to the side. That was decades ago. Eddings made a non issue an issue.
Except that there is a rule, even if Eddings is unaware of it.
Section 3.03 that addresses uniforms doesn’t say anything about a hat at all.
Is it the umpires job to address things that aren’ t in the rule book. Back with Lance wore his batman cleats (which is closer to an official rules violation than having a hat tilted to the side). Should the ump have addressed that or leave it for the league office?
It’s not a playing rule, it’s part of the professional dress/on field conduct code. Whether the umps should enforce that or not is another question. Personally, I’d like to see the league address check swings before worrying about the jaunty angle of a player’s cap.
