Yu Darvish is retiring. No word on exactly how much of the remaining $46M on his contract he’ll be paid, but the article says he’ll be forfeiting the “bulk” of it in whatever deal he and the Padres work out.
Bless you, Marwin Gonzalez, for keeping Darvish out of the Astros’ history books. Well, mainly for that homer off Jansen. But secondarily for keeping Darvish out of the Astros’ history books.

There may be some lawyer type things in play with respect to injury clause.
I recall when Prince Fielder announced his career was over his agent had to correct him from saying “retiring” during the press conference.
Either way Springer ate his lunch in game 7.
ETA: Springer ate Darvish’s lunch. Prince ate most of his own.

I remember Bagwell getting some kind of settlement from the insurance company when they refused to cover the claim for the Astros. Attorneys and courts were involved. Seems like the day after the settlement, Baggy announced his retirement.

I would love to read an article about the current market for insurance on MLB contracts (if one exists). I’ve generally assumed that contracts these days are so huge, and injuries so common, that any premium justifying the policy from an underwriter’s perspective would not be economical for the team.
Seems like we had an insurance expert around here at one time…
Looks like I may be following the Red Sox season. My cousin’s son was signed to a minor league deal with them. After 4 seasons in Japan, he is attempting a return to MLB.
