Baseball Miscellany

This will always be a great tweet, replace [Ohtani] with the player of the moment:

“Welcome back to SportsCenter Presented by ESPN Bet, for more on the [PlayerX] situation we go to our FanDuel MLB Insider Jeff Passan at our DraftKings Studio in Los Angeles brought to you by Caesar’s Sportsbook. Jeff, how could something like this happen?”

Nice story.

I hope Anthony is doing well.

I had such high hopes that he would be a monster slugger.

Great read.

I also liked this anecdote toward the end of the article: Spencer Strider on pitching in Philly

“I love pitching here,” Strider said. “I mean, where else do they chant your name and ask you how your family’s doing? They seem very interested in my well-being, and I appreciate that."

Growing up, I got to watch him play in the minors (the Tucson Toros were the Astros AAA affiliate at the time). I was convinced he would be an All Star.

ETA - I forgot how many guys on the '91 team that won the PCL title went on to play in MLB (with the Astros or otherwise):

That was a helluva Toros team.

I’m not 100% sure that this is the HR, but one of his was “longest HR in Dome history” and they put a star on the seat where it landed…one random sparsely attended game I wandered up to the upper deck and sat in it. It was a long, long way from home plate.

Longer than Rooster’s and the Toy Cannon’s?

Dunno, don’t think I was alive then, show me some videos?

I saw him hit a grand slam in the dome which only fueled my optimism.

I thought he was going to be a superstar

I wish the Astros would go back to the shooting star uni in that photo. Their first, and best, jersey ever.

I thought Anthony was gonna be our Daryl Strawberry

Just another tidbit from that WGN broadcast: the camera wouldn’t tilt up enough to track the ball and see where it landed

…and then there’s this:

Very appropriate that as I lament what could have been with Anthony you remind me of what was with #5.

Somewhere buried deep in storage I’ve still got an Eric Anthony rookie card.

I went up and found the Rader / Wynn seats when I was a kid and, yeah, it seemed unreal that someone could hit a ball there.

I saw them on an Astrodome tour and it is unbelievable.
