Rangers DFA Khris Davis, so maybe he can’t hurt us anymore.

Watch him go back to Oakland.

Wow, surprised.

Man, talk about a guy falling off of a cliff. He was a steady stream of power for three or four years straight…hit age 30 (and a $60MM contract) and bam, that was it.

BTW…the Rangers essentially paid $30MM for Davis’s 61 plate appearances and -0.2 WAR this season.

Too bad Chris Young can’t cut Jon Daniels.

Straw has a 4.4% chase rate, #3 (in either in AL or majors)
(courtesy of the RS radio announcers.)

I have no clue what that means. For the season? For the day? is 4.4% and 3rd in the AL good or bad? Does it mean he strikes out more or less or indifferent? It’s not an obvious kind of statistic.

Sorry, NeilT, posted in the wrong place.

Do it all the time.

4.4 seems kind of high but I know Chase rates will vary depending on if you are buying a car or a house, or seeking some other type of loan. Hopefully Miles is working on bringing up his credit score.

Kris and I have been married for a long time. I’d guess my chase rate is dismal, but that’s how it should be. It doesn’t surprise me that a young good-looking guy is 3rd in mlb, but if he keeps that up he’s gonna get himself in trouble.

As long as he stays away from hot tubs and sliding glass doors he should be ok.

You guys have a sense of humor w/ a slight twist, so I might fit right in.

Love learning, but something came up during the Red Sox broadcast last night that may fit w/ Baseball Miscellany more than my original target.

They referenced a stats geek, wondering if he was by that time during the game had starting watching the Yankees game. Then as Straw’s name came up they mentioned some kind of obscure stat that he was “leading in” that actually sounded good.

They mentioned a 4.4% “chase rate”. Also talked about swings @ pitches o/s the zone, and then something about Straw ranking #3

Got curious, so I checked his ABs:

  • 2nd - 1st pitch - ground rule 2B & RBI (top of the Gamecast zone)
  • 3rd - 9th pitch - 3-2 called 3rd Strike (after 4 foul balls, one out of the zone)
  • 5th - 3rd pitch - 1B - only swing, just touching the inside zone, after a called strike and a ball
  • 7th - 7th pitch - SF & RBI - after taking 2 balls, hitting 4 foul balls, one out of the zone)
  • 9th - 1st pitch - Fly out - in the zone

He saw 21 pitches in five AB:

  • Foul balls - 8 (2 out of the strike zone)
  • Swinging strikes - 0
  • Called Strikes - 3 (including a called 3rd strike)
  • Balls - 6
  • Balls in play - 4 (2B, 1B, SF, fly out)

According to this formula for (SwStr%) swings & misses/total pitches: he had 0 swings & misses/21 pitches = 0.0%

Could that have been what they were talking about?

He put the bat on the ball when he swung last night…

Chase rate is how often someone swings at the pitch that is deemed outside the zone. So if the stat is true it means that on a pitch not in the zone, 4.4% of all pitches outside the zone(wether called a strike or ball, in play or swing and miss) Straw swings.

The thing you seem to be looking for at the end is contact rate, how often someone makes contact while swinging.

TY, Doyce,
I heard just enough to get confused…

I’ve never really thought about it, but I’m assuming contact rate has nothing to do with contact success?

Correct. I’m not sure if fouls are factored in too but I imagine they are
