Aviation

“I didn’t want to worry you”

I stumbled upon Admiral Cloudberg’s blog within the last year or so and fell headfirst down the rabbit hole of aviation disasters. As someone who is irrationally afraid of flying, reading about the mishaps and the knowledge we take away from them has been somewhat comforting.

For the most part, aviation is one thing in life where the default is not to repeat errors expecting a different result. DCA near misses seems to be an exception.

I crack up each time I hear you say this.

I have never seen Hoover get emotional about one of these, but here we are.

I can only assume that he was tearing up over the needless death of a 22-year old with her life ahead of her, and not the 53-year old arrogant fuckwit who ego’d them both into a smoking hole in the ground. The only good thing here is that this moron didn’t take more people with him.

The details are insane. As Hoover says chillingly: “Checklists are written in blood.”

Watched that yesterday. What an ignoramus the allegedly experienced pilot was.

He was texting and making calls while nearly stalling out in the landing pattern, like he was sitting in traffic.

Somewhere there’s a former instructor saying “I had a bad feeling about that guy.”

That guy had many hours, but he made mistakes as if I were flying. He did a go around when he should have landed. Killed a completely innocent newly wed.

Dude was so focused on getting the plane back to the service airport that he neglected everything he learned about problem resolution. He never should have taken a passenger up in that plane in the first place.

In case Boeing wasn’t already completely fucked:

I saw a 350-900 roll up to a gate this week.

It was gorgeous.

Nice landing. Think they let him play through? Just In: A Small Plane Was Just Forced to Land at Riviera Country Club

Any one you walk away from…

What an interesting read. On so many levels.

Holy shit. I somehow made it to the end and learned Trump’s theories of aircraft stealth.

The BA app and website may be the worst online experience I’ve had this century.

Case in point, I am checked in for my return flight but I do not have my e-boarding pass. To get it, you have to go to Manage Booking, which takes you out of the app and onto the website. There you get an option to collect your e-pass which, when you select it, tells you that you can get it through the app by going to Manage Booking. Yes, it is a closed loop of madness; I checked.

On the flight over, the vegetarian meal that is in my profile and that I specifically selected for the flight was not available. The cabin crew who I have found in the past to be pro-active and helpful basically washed their hands of the problem with the barest minimum of an apology.

I have not been able to find any way to pre-order a meal for the return flight, so I fought through the chat bot to a human representative who assured me my meal is selected and will be there.

I would be shocked if United was this bad.
