Surely you’re not suggesting the Astros didn’t care that Torres scored that run, are you?
Defensive indifference applies to stolen bases, runners advancing on a pitch, not on a base hit. The official rule on RBI:
(a) The Official Scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores
(1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter’s safe hit (including the batter’s home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder’s choice, unless Rule 9.04(b) applies;
Rule 9.04(b) simply says that there is no RBI when you hit into a double play.
Bottom line: Hicks put a ball in play that plated a run without the benefit of an error. He gets an RBI.
No, it felt more that some players thot the play was over when it wasn’t. Not indifference, but more like a mental error/losing focus or situational awareness. Time froze except for Torrez, who took advantage.
I don’t remember the last time I have seen that. Several had their backs turned to the action on the bases and relaxed after the ball was gloved, forgetting there was an active runner. Not realizing a run could be scored, there was little anticipation as to what needed to be done to stop it.
It happens! But it was hard to take it in. They are human after all.
Machete could not cover two bases in the bottom of the 8th but he could add two insurance runs in the 9th to poke a hole in the egos of Cole, the Yanks, and their adorable fans, while turning what could have been an unforgettable and most embarrassing loss into a stunning win and perfect end to the road trip.
They were human, not perfect, but this win gave us - and, maybe, them - a glimpse of the team they can become.
Dude, read your question, which included “should he go to second? First?” Totally disingenuous if not dumb, and I give you credit for not being dumb, Where were the next possible plays going to be? Were any of those bases uncovered?
You wasted my time and everyone’s time with questions you knew the answers to. You insulted the intelligence of a sophisticated fan board like this is. If you think that is my arrogance, go for it.
Well then, I’m sorry I caused you to waste time. I generally come here when I have time to waste. I will make a greater effort to be more concise with my future postings so as not to potentially waste the valuable time members spend on here. Starting now.
Not exactly: Cole was ahead when he finished the 7th. Then Green relieved Cole to start the 8th and gave up 31-yr-old Altuve’s answer to the Yankee fans taunts - a 3-run HR, giving the Astros their 1st lead in the game.
Thanks to Pressly, DPs in the 8th & 9th, and Machete’s heroics, the crazy brain-freeze run - that cut the lead to 1 run - did not lead to blowing the lead.
That loss would have indeed a keepsake for the Yanks when they show up in Houston in July and, possibly, when the playoffs come around, while the win was a much-needed statement after two losses when the Astros could only muster 6 total runs.
