Can someone please alert Dusty there is now a three-batter minimum for all relievers, unless they get the last out of the inning, and Kendall Graveman is pitching really well, so Benitendi’s numbers against him from when he was a mediocre-to-bad starter years ago aren’t relevant?
That would have been great 24 hrs ago.
It would be great if Dusty Baker wasn’t managing this team and being a late-inning, close game liability on a nightly basis.
You’re doing a heckuva job, Dusty.
Kendall Graveman became a converted late-inning reliever in Seattle last season. Want to know how many at bats Benintendi has against him since that happened? Zero. The Mariners did not play the Red Sox last year, and they hadn’t faced the Royals this year before the Astros traded for Graveman.
Graveman was out for all of 2019, so that means Dusty Baker used stats from 2018 and beyond (when Graveman was a failed starter in Oakland) to determine that Benintendi shouldn’t face him.
This quote and the one from Monday’s loss where he explained his logic in pitching to Salvador Perez in the eighth inning of a tie game with runners on second and third should get Baker fired. He’s living in the ancient past when making decisions.
Twice this series Dusty has managed the game based on 2012 rather than 2021.
That explains why he asked for Wesley Wright to get warm.
A small part of my brain hopes the Astros miss the playoffs just to make sure I don’t have to see Dusty Baker in the Astros dugout again.
But then the bigger part of my brain reminds me that Jim Crane apparently thinks losing to dogshit teams like the Royals is fine, and that Dusty is doing a great job.
Even if they win the WS I would put a lot of money on Dusty getting replaced.
I have the opposite view…even if the Astros lose the next 42 games, Dusty is back at least for two more seasons. Of course, I’m an eternal optimist.
This is my biggest concern/fear.
We went from one of the smartest baseball minds of our generation to Uncle Dumbfuck, and our owner doesn’t see the difference.
Remember Click came from the organization that thinks Kevin Cash did a great job in the WS.
Add to this Benintendi is hitting LHP better than RHP this year. Focus on THIS game and THIS year, Dusty, not on the past or on what you think you remember. Oh, yeah, one more thing. Use your best relievers to safeguard a win or a tie late in the game. Relievers are not all the same.
The fact that they haven’t extended Dusty speaks volumes. Not common for managers in good standing to enter the stretch run of a contract year without job security. They could announce an extension any minute and make me look like a fool, but I think he is gone.
This conversation is not helping me process things and move on.
This is where I am, too. I suspect Crane is just playing nice for the cameras. It wouldn’t make much sense to fire the beloved old-timer you brought on for some presumed goodwill.
Do not speak of such things
