Astros at Cubs, 4//25/24

Over those 9 games, they’ve allowed 14 runs in the first inning

Also embarrassing and not going to win you many games.

The cherry on top is that we won’t even get the #1 pick.

It’s usually one of two things

An older team makes one last run before the fall off the age cliff

A team that vastly overperforms coming back to earth

The Astros don’t really fit either of these. Sure some guys fit the former and a couple fit the latter but by and large they don’t fit the mold.

This is a uniquely terrible team for no reason whatsoever.

That has to be the title of the book about this season.

It’s essentially The Worst Case Scenario on just about every front.

Amazing in it’s dogshittery.

Glad that you guys are watching. I’ve watched about 8 games this season and that was more than enough for me.

Just like anything else that’s bad for your health. I know it’s bad, I know I should stop, every time I do it I say it’s the last time, but I can’t stop. Deep down I know I’ll never stop. I can’t help it.

“Murphy’s Law: The Story of the 2024 Houston Astros”

Day game on a self-prescribed “do as little as possible” day off. The Stros apparently thought the same.

I find myself finding many various other things to do with my evenings these days. I like it but it sucks at the same time.

The unfortunate side effect is I still check the score on my phone while the games are happening and have to swallow back the bile/rage, but at least it’s just a few times a night and not a 3 hour exercise in self loathing.

I usually blitz though the GZ threads a time or 2 a night when I’m not watching…yall are usually exponentially more entertaining than the on-field product

I’m also just not as completely apeshit about the results of sporting events as I used to be…watching a couple of WS celebrations will do that, I guess.

Now for the Texans and UH hoops to step up. I won’t complain when UT wins another football trophy either.

Of course not: you’ll be a very old man and just happy to wake up in the morning. [ducks]

If anyone is still on the “it’s still early” train - looking at you, Mr. Bagwell - the 1914 Boston Braves are the only team ever to make the postseason after losing 19 of the first 26.

As of this morning, the Astros are 7-19. To get to a plausible wildcard position of 90 wins, they have to go 83-53 (.610) the rest of the way. That’s a 98-win pace. I think we’ll be watching the postseason from the outside this year.

You can’t win the World Series in April, but you can lose it.

And my calculation didn’t even take into account their penchant for taking August off.

Could they be a 98 win team for the next 5 months? Of course, I don’t think they will but they have the talent to do it. The hole can’t get any bigger than it is right now though.

While I agree that things look bad, they still are only 6 games out. It really doesn’t matter how many games they win or lose as long as they can keep pace with everyone else in the division. Fortunately for them, as of now, the division looks terrible. They do need to figure things out sooner rather than later.

They’re gonna have to get back to .500 before I care about how many games back they are

It is a bit of a miracle that they’re only 6 games out; I was quite surprised by that when I looked at the standings this morning to do my little arithmetic exercise. So if Framber comes back strong and Urquidy comes back and aliens return the real Abreu (Bryan, I’ve given up on Jose), Pressly, and Hader, and Bregman starts to hit and Alvarez pops out of his funk, I suppose it could happen.
