Astros @ A's, September 9, 2020

It’s his first start in the bigs, but he’d been a starter in the minors.

I figured that’s what you meant after I hit reply.

Right, obviously there’s a reason one guy’s a starter and the other guy’s not. But still, it’s clear that Scrubb isn’t doing anything other than throwing his two pitches up there and hoping for a good result. Any major league pitcher should be well beyond that.

That’s the rub.

These guys weren’t supposed to be MLB pitchers this year.

I meant he’d been a starter in previous seasons. Obviously he hasn’t been starting in 2020. Sorry if that was unclear.

In general, it’s a good sign when a young guy with a lively fastball has a plus changeup, or even a pretty good one. That’s a foundation for a lot of good things if you can make the ball go where you want it to.

I do not think a relief pitcher has the luxury of a plan. One usually inherits trouble and must throw his best pitch for strikes. Hoping for the best is part of it too.

I think Harry Kalas called that Wynn blast.

Joe Espada needs to get the fuck out of the way of pop ups. Good grief.

He listened.

I was wondering if that distracted Maldonado.

He certainly didn’t seem to be looking for Martin.

this ump…

He came out of the dugout and got right in Machete’s way.

Josh James sighting…

Ok, here we go…

Only one reliever I ever saw could stand up there and just throw his best pitch for a strike and make it work. Even if you have only two pitches you have to have some common sense about how and where to throw them.

James in his first appearance since August 20th.

Let’s hope he can throw his best pitch for a strike.

If that pitch is a slider, early returns are discouraging.
