Astros all quarter century team

The Athletic has been doing these all quarter century teams, for MLB as a whole and then for each team. Chandler Rome did one for the Astros and it’s, uhm, interesting to say something. Anyway, thought I’d post it here.

I have some issues here. Biggio should not be on this, I love him to death but he’s in no way one of the Astros best players of the last 25 years.

Not having Yordan is a crime.

Having Cole in there over Framber is incredibly dumb. I know he was great when he was here but come on. It was only two years and the guy is a fucking dick.

Berkman to LF, Bagwell at 1B and Yordan DH. I don’t know what Chandler was smoking here

Biggio over Altuve at 2B is just the dumbest list possible. Altuve is the single most important and valuable player in Astros history. Period. I can only imagine the idiocy displayed in the rest of the list.

He tried to get cute and have both Altuve and Biggio on the team with Altuve in LF. Really dumb because Yordan is not on the team at all. He had Berkman at 1B and Bagwell at DH.

Something I find funny is Altuve was rightly chosen as the 2B for the MLB team but not for the Astros.

Yeah, no telling where this franchise would be over the last 25 years without Bagwell’s six games at DH. The whole list is just mind-numbingly stupid.

For what it’s worth, not much, here’s how I would have it.

C Martin Maldonado
1B Jeff Bagwell
2B Jose Altuve
SS Carlos Correa
3B Alex Bregman
LF Lance Berkman
CF George Springer
RF Kyle Tucker
DH Yordan Alvarez

SP Justin Verlander, Roy Oswalt, Dallas Keuchel, Framber Valdez and Roger Clemens

CP Ryan Pressly

Not sure I would change anything with that

The only debate in my mind is Maldy vs Ausmas or maybe Castro. Maybe add a utility spot for Marwin. Somebody might make a Hunter Pence case.

See? How hard was that?

Maldonado as the Astros’ top C of the century sounds like rage-bait but is perfectly reasonable, for better or worse.

Catcher is not an especially strong position in Astros history

That’s an understatement

Rome’s entire article screams “clickbait” to me

Yeah, he’s not evaluated on whether his articles are any good.

All of those lists seem to purposefully make crap choices to generate engagement.

No thanks.

This is akin to “teaching the controversy”. Some say the earth is a sphere that orbits the sun. Others say it’s a flat disk sitting on an infinite stack of turtles. We present both theories equally. Idiots.

turtles all the way down

Didn’t Biggio play like 5 times more games in LF, this century, than Altuve?

Yes. It’s a stupid fucking list.

A perfectly fine and reasonable list. Unlike the one in the article. If they framed the convo as a popularity test, fine. But, that was not the exercise.

How awesome is it for us that a player that played 8 of his 20 Hall of Fame seasons in this 25 year stretch should not even be on the list?
