Home! Had a few inches of standing water in my detached garage that my sump pump typically takes care of but I had everything up off the floor anyway. A few minutes of the generator attached to the pump and it was gone. Now doing some work with my desk fan and a beer!
Iāve got a $600.00 Generac gas generator. It powers my modem, refrigerator, a window A/C unit in my bedroom, several lamps. and microwave oven. But not my range/oven or central air. Still, I have a Coleman camp stove and also can use my propane range top in my camper. I keep a couple of 5 gallon Jerry cans of non-ethanol gas on hand.
I have a small Honda EU2000i that ran for a week straight keeping a refrigerator, fan, TV, etc going. I think you can get one, or something similar for about $600-800.
What is the cost to have an electrician wire it into your home? Or, do you just run extension cables from your appliances out the door to the generator?
For one of little portable jobs like I have, I just use extension cords. I have a refrigerator, TV, fan, etc all outside or in the garage, so itās not a big deal. Otherwise, yeah, just run them in through the door or window. If you want a more substantial generator to run more than a few things, they have different sizes and fuel types. They even have mult-fuel ones. Those are more like $3,000, depending on size. To get one wired up to you house, with the interlock and everything, itās probably another $1,000. Then there are, of course, those whole-home standby generators. Now youāre looking at $10,000+. The little inverter has served me fine. Itās small, and only holds a gallon of gas, but thatās about 18-20 hours, depending on load.
I have seriously looked at battery backups like the Ecoflow. They have quite a bit of power, and you can use those indoors. You can get solar recharging as well. They are pricey too, however, around $5,000-6,000 for the same power you get from a $600 gasoline powered model.
Iāve been looking into a Jackery power station with solar panels. More for boondocking than as a backup but they will work as a backup too. I just canāt decide how much I want to spend, the price range and is vast and the options are numerous.
Iām looking at those too. Wouldnāt mind one for tailgating. But I remain unconvinced about the cost/run time/value compared to my little Honda. Iām just not ready to spend $5,000+ for a temporary inconvenience that happens every 10 years or so.
I have an old-school Troy-Bilt 5550 watt that at the moment is holding up the fridge, a fan, a lamp, my workstation with various drives and charging stations, my TV and my internet. It has a 5-gallon (gasoline) tank and it ran from 6pm last night to 7:15a this morning when I filled it up again so 12+ hours on a tank. I keep 5 5-gallon gas cans and was able to fill them all up on Monday before the storm.
The generator was given to me by a good friend who sold his house for a condo. Itās loud as fuck, though.
Those standard A/C generators are indeed loud as fuck. Have you noticed any issues with powering electronics? Some people argue that they can ruin sensitive electronic equipment such as computers.
