Angels at Astros, 8/13/23

Scott Servais had a proper LEGO head redass meltdown over the strike zone a bit ago.

Holy shit, Cedric Mullins

3-2 Orioles in the 9th, he goes over the wall to save a HR. Next batter naturally hits one into the upper deck to tie it for Seattle

And then Mullins just pulled an upper deck shot foul to take back the lead.

And then parks the next pitch fair. What a badass. I love Mullins.

I’ve always liked him. I think the Stros were involved in trade talks about him in the past.

I didn’t notice what caused the call, but the Rangers announcers were ā€œno doubt about itā€ and ā€œKapler didn’t even think about arguing.ā€ So… probably some bullshit.

The Angles took a game on the division today.

It was a start-stop balk. Pitcher started into the stretch then stopped. It was pretty obvious.

11 runs back to back games, but everyone ā€œknewā€ this lineup was not going to score 3+ runs today before the game even started.

Dusty is completely infuriating.

At least the Rangers and Mariners both lost.

Go sweep Miami.

Miami ain’t no joke. I’ll be happy with another 2 outta 3.

I’ll never be sad with two out of three.

I understand the need to play bench players occasionally, and I think much of Dubon’s struggles are from no longer playing every day. That said, I agree with the sentiments expressed here re Dusty’s seemingly indifferent attitude about being the team chasing, not leading, and his apparent inability to put a strong lineup on the field in every game.

Aside from the lineups, Yordan and Bregman must produce. Tucker cannot do everything. Singleton caught lightning in a bottle for one game and should not be expected to contribute much, if anything, going forward. I am holding my breath on Abreu’s back, but he could be out indefinitely. Despite the unfair (imo) crap he takes on this board, for awhile he was hitting and producing runs like we expected him to hit. I may be the only one, but I think his loss will hurt, and there is no doubt in my mind his more recent struggles are caused by back pain which does not allow him to hit off his back leg.

When Yordan does not drive in runs, the offense is doomed to struggle. Like you, I have no explanation for the inconsistent run production we see. The Rangers are formidable (I hate ā€˜em almost as much as NYY) and the Astros will not catch them with inconsistent, spotty play. Dusty should go shopping for a sense of urgency.

Dodgers and Mets my most hated. Gotta feel sorry about Mets. But I guess 80’s over.

I have to say a lot of my initial reaction to the lineup yesterday was glancing at what was posted and it not including Tucker, which was obviously an error. And I agree about backups having to play, and especially about Yordan and Bregman having to produce. Yordan hit a few balls well yesterday with nothing to show, but he’s not been hitting well the last week. Bregman? Well, he is what he is, which is not the All-Star type of player everyone thought he would become. I still think the best lineup is Pena hitting second between Altuve and Yordan, followed by Tucker and Bregman. If Dusty insists on squeezing Bregman between Yordan and Tucker so it’s not two lefties in a row, so be it, though Yordan has shown over and over that he don’t give a shit about facing lefties, so it’s not really an advantage for the other team.

Totally agree re PeƱa. I think Bregman is miscast and wasted in 2.

I like the way Dusty’s been using them lately with Bregman at 2 and PeƱa down lower. It’s not a perfect scenario but given the versions of both of them that we’ve seen in 2023, that’s how I’d deploy them. PeƱa just hasn’t been right with the stick and Bregman is getting on base without doing much else, so I’m fine with him setting the table even if ideally he’d be in the heart of the order.

That’s about where I am too.

Like I said in another thread, this team’s 2 hole hitter hasn’t played a game this season.

For what it’s worth, Bregman is hitting .268/9/43 in the 2 hole.

He’s also hitting .300 6/19 since the all star break.

He’s 6th in the AL with 75 RBI’s.

Yeah, he’s frustrating at times, but there are several other problems higher on the list, including production from 1B, PeƱa, and Yordan.

I was surprised when I looked up is rbi totals today.
