A Republic, If You Can Keep It

I hope they at least send those letters some day.

Trying to save democracy.

Elon’s SS payments are prompt.

They did a performative stunt at USAID today, but a dozen of them or so voted to confirm Trump’s (it goes without saying - wholly unfit) nominee for Treasure Secretary who has sat back and let this all happen.

Brian “everybody!” Schatz has vowed to obstruct everything until the USAID situation is reversed. That’s fine, but here’s the thing: all of them should be obstructing absolutely everything for the next 4 years. Both chambers, every Democratic lead state house, every non-profit.

They should McConnell the shit out of this, but they’re still playing along as if this is politics as normal and as if anyone on planet earth will give them credit for trying to come to a consensus where possible. The GOP will laugh and piss in their open mouths while Democrats will hate them for it and not come out to support them when it matters…which is every minute of every day now.

That’s exactly how it seems from over here.

I doesn’t get any better the closer you get.

Step One: Create problem
Step Two: Back away from the problem you created
Step Three: Claim to have solved the entirely self-created problem
Stop Four: Rinse, repeat

The Treasury has been looted, no more need for distraction.

So Trump was convinced to back off his trade war by Canada promising to do something they already announced in December and Mexico promising to do something they started doing in 2021.

He’s got his sights set on negotiating the Treaty of Paris next. You won’t want to miss that one.

The AFL-CIO is suing the Treasury Dept for sharing PII with Musk. Good.

Meanwhile, every Democrat on the Agriculture committee voted to further the nomination of the idiot climate denier that Trump put up for Ag Secretary. Every. Single. One.

Then there’s this:

He is quite rightly getting absolutely slaughtered in the comments. The Dems are not up for this fight.

Hakeem Jeffries has said that it’s not the job of Democrats to swing at every pitch, only the ones they can hit.

No, it’s the job of the Dems to step out of the batters box, grab a base and yeet it into CF, kick dirt and call everyone a fucking cocksucker.

Doesn’t help much when you’re a .120 hitter.

But Jeffries is a 420 hitter.

I find it very telling that the pitch they choose to swing at is USAID. On the same day, they could have gone down to Treasury and focused on Musk’s illegal actions, something that could affect all Americans or gone to DOJ, where goons have taken over the Rule of Law, but instead, they choose to take a stand at USAID.

I really hope a new, completely different group of candidates run in Democratic primaries. Let’s see if there is public enthusiasm for something different.

When the Dems re-elected the same leadership - notably Chuck Schumer and a bunch of septuagenarian committee heads - they signaled that they weren’t up for the fight. The GOP gave MTG a committee chair ffs!

They should be camping out on the steps of the Treasury Dept and dragging the TV cameras there every day while this is happening.

You might be underestimating the global political importance of USAID. There’s a reason Putin is so excited about this. I completely understand your point though.

ETA: what we’re witnessing here is Naomi Klein’s “Shock Doctrine” on steroids. We are fucked and I don’t feel like I’m overreacting. This is all worse than I even expected.
