It doesn’t mean anything to me, but I hope evangelicals who voted for Trump noticed that his hand was not on the Bible when he was sworn in. Maybe he’d sold it already.
The election is over, my man. Trump and the GOP get to run roughshod until the next time the voters’ feelings matter, which is maybe summer 2026 at the earliest. People will be so inundated in shit by then that they won’t remember what happened the first week of this administration.
Right. They’re not playing a long game trying to avoid the same electoral backlash Trump got first time. The GOP won the White House, Senate and House in 2016 and by 2020 they had lost the lot.
The lesson would have been to ease into their agenda so that they do not face such a reversal again. But, nope, they’re going all out from the outset with all the stuff that will piss off people, despite not cracking 50% at the polls.
As long as enough democracy remains intact by November 2026, there’s a chance to reverse this error at the polls.
In other executive orders…Trump instituted the federal death penalty. Which has already been in effect since 1988. He also “fired” Keisha Lance Bottoms from the President’s Export Council…a position from which she resigned two weeks ago.
He’s getting shit done, even shit that was already done. Rumor is he’s going to sign the Magna Carta next week.
That’s the beauty of the county-by-county election process. It makes it almost impossible to hack in a meaningful way - only large counties like Harris offer any kind of target - so it means that it takes time to rat fuck the entire country. States run by Democrats will hold the line, and this includes a number of the swing states; at least for 2026.
The voters reacted hard to Trump 1.0. If they do the same again, permanent rat fucking efforts should be stopped in their tracks.
I was just in the States and all I saw was the average person being completely fine with everything. Like cattle completely oblivious. I’m glad someone is staying positive though. I’m all out of hope.
Trump has reversed a Biden rule that ICE cannot go into hospitals, churches and schools to detain people. Trump says he trusts ICE to do the right thing.
Presumably, “the right thing” is dragging abuela from a church in front of her family, friends and community.
Here is what my plan is, and I hate Trump and MAGA as much or more as anyone. Pardoning the Jan 6 insurrectionists was reprehensible, but so was Biden’s pardoning family members. I am not going to rail at everything Trump does, and I am going to read as little as possible about him. This country elected him, and I have to live with that result no matter how much I oppose his individual decisions, actions, and statements. That is called democracy, and I have what many of you think is naive confidence in this country’s ultimate refusal to embrace tyranny.
I do not necessarily share your confidence as I once did. Every democratic government in history was eventually seized by some form of populist authoritarian. Do I think it’s Trump? No, he’s too old, too lazy, and too stupid. But the door is now open. I honestly thought that January 6th, a direct attempt to forcefully overthrow our democracy and execute our Constitutionally elected leaders by a group of wingnuts, would be a watershed moment for this country. Sadly, it wasn’t. Not only was it just not an eye opener, but the people have also subsequently, at the first available opportunity, elected these same wingnuts to positions of power and ceded almost unlimited and unilateral control and our cherished system of checks and balances. So, while I do not think our country will necessarily embrace tyranny, I do fear we could find ourselves down a very dark, difficult path before that path is recognized for what it is.
My belief is that many people have listened to the “government is broken” mantra for so long that they’d rather have a strongman who “gets things done”, even if those things are abhorrent.
I did not say or mean to imply my (naive?) belief will be easy to achieve. We/I have lived through dark days before, and he is or wants to be an absolute power tyrant. I think he will fail. It was not only MAGA who elected him this time, and my hope is his dictatorial excesses will be too much for many/most them eventually.
Hard to believe, but I will be 80 this year. I hope to live long enough to see his downfall which I believe is coming. All I am saying is I am not going to rail each day about how terrible I think he and his policies are.
Case in point: Episcopal bishop Mariann Budde spoke at Trump’s inaugural prayer service. Trump said “it wasn’t too exciting”, and the GOP is now calling for her to be deported. To where it’s unclear as she is an umpteenth generation U.S. citizen.
Oh, I’m not going to rail every day either. Only occasionally. But I do fear for our system of checks and balances that has served the country well for so long.
80 years old…I’ve mentioned before that I’m now older than you were when I first met you, and that is unsettling. And I hope you live to see the Astros win the pennant on your 100th birthday.
