A Republic, If You Can Keep It

They will, but they’ll blame it on obstructionist Democrats.

I love it but had to delete it in case one of my coworkers or boss’ saw.

Love the tune, hate the (truth) in the message.

Mediocre tune, better message

In a perfect world Woody Guthrie would have presaged all this with a song called Rent Seeker’s Blues. And in a more perfect world it would have been left alone by Stetson hat wearing thrill seekers.

But in the real world sending that song’s lyrics to someone who needs to hear them would land you in the clink behind terrorism charges on an impossibly high bail.

Love Woody and Arlo

…and then there’s the Chuck

In the article in Time magazine supporting its selection of Trump as “Person of the Year”, the magazine points out that Trump’s main campaign pitch was that he would cut costs - all costs, be they groceries, gas, insurance…everything - was a lie.

In the article (not linked here on purpose because fuck them), the article quotes Trump as saying - post-election - that once prices are up it’s impossible to get them down.

Very Man of the Yearish behavior.

This should be the Dem’s message every waking hour from Jan 20 on, but they are so bad at politics, they likely won’t. Every day, ask the press “are egg prices where they were before Biden took over?” Every fucking day.

“people” have been saying this for the last 2 decades.

Good luck, Democrats.

That doesn’t matter. Eggs can go to $37/dozen in February and the wingnuts will claim that they were $200/dozen in 2024 and Trump brought them to an all time low. Reality will never factor into Republican thinking.

Eggs are not 34 or 200 or whatever a dozen. Fuck off about all that.

Supply and demand. While the pandemic and inflation played a role in the increased cost of eggs, I was under the impression that the real culprit was the H5N1 (bird flu) outbreak, which did some serious damage to the supply. Since it began in 2022 and through December 10 of this year more that 120,000,000 birds have been affected by the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

With so many birds lost to the virus, and egg production below normal levels, the suppliers can’t keep up with consumer demand. Especially during the holiday baking season. That dynamic leads to higher prices.

That and a little good old fashioned price fixing:

You’re hung up on reality. You gotta get over that if you’re gonna be a Republican.

It doesn’t matter how high the costs of eggs get, the costs will pale in comparison to the fully loaded cost per egg I pay every day. The backyard chicken fad is a sham.

No, but it will factor into the thinking of those swing voters who voted for Trump because he promised to bring down prices “on day one”.

“It’s the economy, stupid” remains undefeated.

I’ve never tried to raise chickens but I like the flavor of backyard eggs or free range chicken eggs better than cruel darkness caged chicken are raised in. So I spend the extra buck for the eggs from birds that live outdoors, see the sun and have a varied diet of seeds, grains, grass, bugs and worms. Such a better way to treat livestock.

I was tempted to respond to the “eggs aren’t 34 or 200…” quip with “oh yeah, you don’t get your eggs from Mrs. das Backyard Henhouse and Fresh Egg Emporium”.

My wife has 6 chickens in the backyard. I never noticed the price of eggs had gone up. That must be why I voted for Harris since obviously eggs are far more important than treating people with compassion and respect.
