There is so much malfeasance and incompetence here, but I cannot stop thinking that the inclusion of a journalist in the chat group is the canary, not the poisonous coal mine. Officials at the very highest level of government were using an unsecured, commercial messaging app when they have perfectly good and secure email. The true scandal is why?
To me it’s obvious why: they want to keep the conversations off the books so that they cannot be easily obtained as part of any official investigation. That is the heart of the scandal here, and the journalist being in the chat is just a consequence, not the original sin itself.
It’s as if “lock her up” was never a thing.

Take the 28-year-old Welsh artist Rebecca Burke, for example. She was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) for 19 days in what her father described as “horrendous conditions”. Now, to be fair, Burke had the wrong paperwork: she hadn’t realised that she needed a working visa instead of a tourist visa in order to exchange domestic chores for accommodation with a host family. But getting imprisoned for almost three weeks over a mix-up and then being led on to a deportation flight – in chains!– back to a country that is supposedly a close ally, is obviously extreme.
Is it speculated that Goldberg was added to the chain by a mole, whistle-blower type (on someone’s staff) in order to get the word out to the American people just how incompetent and corrupt they are.
