There are two schools of thought among announcers, though, as you probably know. Kalas is not the only one who does not adhere to the old school superstition. The great Gene Elston did not, and I do not remember what TK’s dad did. Maybe the current Kalas was too flip/casual? I do not know because I was not listening.
I don’t remember the Don Wilson no-hitters or Forsch’s well enough to remember Gene’s calls, I saw the Ryan no-hitter in September '81 on a Saturday Nationally broadcast game and I missed Mike Scott’s. So I don’t remember Gene’s calls but I would think his mentioning of a no-hitter in progress was much less than Kalas going on and on about every aspect of throwing a no-hitter. I think Kalas is great at calling plays but his commentary and banter is as banal as Milo’s.
Kalas has mentioned before that he realizes it annoys many fans (I would imagine poor Julia gets inundated with angry tweets about it as it’s happening) and he would keep that in mind. Apparently not all that much in mind.
Might Heyward become the regular central fielder?
My thoughts on announcers and karma/superstition. I’m a man of science. Show me the data and there is a rational, consistent explanation for everything. Except baseball. It doesn’t follow consistent expectations and is wholly unpredictable in a way no other sport is. It sets you up for failure and disappointment, and you have to overcome. Therein lies its greatness. The BBGs are real in that sense. They are fickle and unpredictable. You have to respect the potential chaos and heartbreak. So don’t wave your dick at them, TK. It only makes the inevitable heartbreak hurt more.
I was wondering the same thing, so I looked up how much CF he’s played. Some but not a lot. I’m sure he could, and his arm is certainly an upgrade, but not sure about his “go-get-em”ness.
Pasquantino out 6-8 weeks with a broken thumb after last night’s play. That really sucks. I like him a lot. Also quite a blow to my Mihoba team.
That’s the rest of the season. Hate to see that, especially on a random play like that.
And it was his glove hand.
Freak injury.
The BBGs are not to be mocked, woe to the man with such hubris
He’s a RF…LF if needed
Could not have said this better myself in a million years.
Strong arm in the corner OF probably more important than one in CF, yes?
In a perfect world you have a cannon in CF and RF, and both guys can go track down and get a ball at walls and in gaps.
This is not a perfect world/team, and I’ll take what we can get.
Yes
Ideal:
Strongest arm in RF (Clemente)
Weakest arm in LF (Luzinski)
Gap to gap speed in CF (Mays) a strong arm is a plus
