The Astros currently have 10 guys on the 60-day IL plus a full 40-man. Obviously, some of the 40 will be free agents after the WS, but when do they have to make decisions about the injured players? Don’t they count against the 40-man at some point?
They will have to be added back to the 40-man the day the offseason officially starts. That’s also the same day players become free agents, so that’ll open up some spots
By my count from scanning the 40-man with no confirming anything, looks like 5 spots should be opening up with departing free agents
There will need to be some non-tenders like Urquidy for one.
By early December, the prospects the Astros want to protect from the rule 5 draft will also need to be added.
Some very tough choices.
I show 8 free agents
Bregman
Verlander
Kikuchi
Graveman
Neris
Ferguson
Heyward
Gamel
That leaves 42 players.
I would expect Urquidy and Hummel to be non-tendered.
Then they need to decide if any prospects likely to be drafted in rule 5 are better than anyone currently on 40 man.
Has there been an injury update on Urquidy? Or are you just commenting on his general ability and value?
I have not heard anything.
I just assume they will not want to offer arbitration to a pitcher who is a bottom of the rotation type and will definitely miss 1/2 the season, likely more, and possibly the whole season.
I actually think it would be great if they signed him to a 2 year deal in the $3-5M range skipping arbitration and keeping him an additional, presumably healthy season.
But now roster spots are at a premium.
My post above doesn’t even consider filling the starting 3b spot and improving 1b, LF, and possibly CF
Thanks for the clarification.
FYI started a rule 5 thread over in the bus ride with a short history lesson of the post shorter June draft / better data Rule 5. It isn’t your father’s rule 5 where you find a Marwin Gonzalez.
Urquidy I can see but I was not figurine on Hummel.
Thank you.
I’ll show myself out.
