46th President

I’m not a political scholar but I don’t think the Senate was designed to be based on population. AFAIK that was never the intention, even knowing that states would have greatly different numbers in terms of population.

That is correct. However, SD, ND, MT, WY, and ID were created for the purpose of amassing more Republican Senators.

That’s kind of like saying Puerto Rico and DC will be given statehood to amass more Democratic senators, isn’t it?

Yes, it is, and also why it’s hard to listen to the wailing of those who oppose it.

The official reason is that they couldn’t agree on a capital.

But that’s not why they should be given statehood. They should be given statehood because they deserve it. Because they’ve earned it. The Senate thing comes with that. Regardless of party.

Yes, it was set up that way…the Great Compromise of 1787 and all that. It was also set up when there were 13 States, and it was expected that the Senate would be the lesser influential of the two legislative bodies. They figured the real power of Congress would reside in the House of Representatives. But it hasn’t worked out that way. I’m not judging, just pointing out the disparity that it has become, and the disproportionate power smaller states have gained over the years as the relative influence of larger states has declined with the increase in sheer number of states.

Prime example: the House must generate all spending bills. An item that has achieved total irrelevance.

All spending bills or just all taxing bills? I’ve never heard the former.

I believe it’s any and all spending, hence they talk about the House having the “power of the purse”.

Pretty sure this is wrong. The power of the purse belongs to Congress as a whole, but according to the Origination Clause, only the House can raise revenue.

Appropriations bills must be passed by both houses of Congress. While they almost always originate in the House, there is no requirement that they do. Either house may introduce them.

I was gonna say pythons and meth

Want to know why corporate America is (for now) siding with the people over the GOP?

It’s not rocket science. Put shots in arms and bucks in hands (of people who don’t already have more than they can spend).

Here’s an awesome PsakiBomb, but it’s a damning indictment of the White House press corps that one of the accredited members would bring up an internet rumor without even checking the math.

Jen swats it instantly like Mutumbo in a Geiko add and then tells him to do his fucking job. All in a fraction of the time it took to ask the question. It’s as good a metaphor for the competence and focus of this administration as you’re likely to get.

I don’t think this argument is as good as she thinks it is:

Psaki is a real life C.J. Cregg.
