2026 Dead Pool

She had congenital dextrocardia, a rare condition where a person’s heart is on the opposite side of the body from where it should be. My understanding is that while that itself is not necessarily fatal, people with that condition offer suffer other secondary conditions in addition to being more susceptible to other diseases/infections that are otherwise mild for most people.

Dextrocardia has many causes (most of which are not well understood) and may be associated with other anomalies. Whether someone with dextrocardia has an increased risk from infection likely has to do with the underlying cause or associated defects. Specifically, the infection risk is higher if a particular person’s dexrtrocardia arises from ciliary defects (hairlike steuctures on cells that move things - such as on cells lining respiratory tract), or is associated with asplenia (lack of a spleen).

A 71 y/o with (possibly) untreated COVID is already at high risk for bad outcomes.

Sanford and Son was a guilty pleasure for me. I knew I shouldn’t think it was funny but Red Foxx was hilarious.

Mickey Lolich - I loved marveling at the length of his career when I looked at the back of his baseball card. I was collecting in the mid 70’s. I think his 308 Ks in 71 was something else that stood out to me.

I like it when they had to go to the small font on the back of cards.

I hear he always had some pretty good wine.

Lolich had as good or a better 7 year run than many Hall members. He was really good and a workhorse.

I remember the type was so tiny, you could barely read the back of the 1969 Hoyt Wilhelm card.

195 complete games and 41 complete game shutouts out of 496 starts - definitely a workhorse.

It doesn’t seem to have been picked up by the media yet, but his wife posted that he died following complications from surgery. Pinch-running specialist with the 2015 Royals and 2021 Braves, played parts of 8 seasons but only once got more than 10 plate appearances in a season. Terribly sad news.

ESPN now reporting it

Ray Handley, 81. Handley was a successful assistant coach in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the Giants, but was a disaster as their head coach, leading to the infamous “Ray Must Go” chants and his storming out of a post-game press conference.

For a team that’s made several Super Bowls in the past few decades the Giants have had a fair number of really bad head coaches.
