Sylvester Turner, former Houston mayor, current U.S. rep and famous defamation plaintiff.
Mayor Turner started at Fulbright & Jaworski a few years before I did, and I followed his career fairly closely. I worked on his mayoral campaigns, and chaired one of his transition teams. I worked closely with him while he was mayor. He was smart, tough, and I think the best mayor Houston has had. I’ll miss him as a good friend.
Well the authorities have determined that the causes were not “suspicious”, just awful:
His wife passed away a week before he did, from hantavirus (a rodent-borne disease.) Hackman died a week later of heart disease; he had “highly advanced” Alzheimer’s and likely did not understand his wife had died. The dog was crated and died of starvation.
That is just tragic all around.
Oh bobsaget I meant to rewatch The Conversation. My son and I are in San Francisco this weekend and I wanted to pre-game a little. Oh well, I’ll watch it when I get home I guess.
I’ll tell you another pleasantly maddeningly vague movie that I love in which nothing much happens that I also need to revisit and that’s Save the Tiger.
The Conversation is a fucking great movie!!
As is Scarecrow!
I watched Prime Cut the day before yesterday. The movie is okay but Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman are fantastic. Want to see how sausage is made?
I think it’s maybe the saddest outcome.
Art Schallock, MLB”s oldest living player, 100, just a few weeks shy of 101. Schallock pitched for the Yankees and Orioles in the early 50s.
That title now passes to Bill Greason, also 100 years old.
I read A Season on the Brink as a kid.
Been a fan of Feinstein’s ever since.
He was always good in any interview I ever saw him in.
Good friend and former teammate is Duke graduate who couldn’t stand his fellow alumnus. Apparently, that was a commonly shared sentiment amongst the alumni who thought Feinstein took too many shots at his alma mater.
Me, I always liked his writing and enjoyed his columns for WaPo immensely.
ETA - fuck Duke
The Punch, was excellent.
He was good.
I think you meant, dook.
“Slick” Watts. Those Sonics teams were fun to watch.
Ken Hall, The “Sugar Land Express” one of the greatest high school football players of all time.
Many years back, Ken Hall Barbecue in Fredericksburg was an excellent stop before it transitioned to Cranky Frank’s and ultimately closed down.
