Sidebar, my father-in-law (RIP) was one of those hundreds. That entire team (as far as I am aware) was awarded Presidential Medals of Freedom.
Years later, people would see his copy of that award, framed and hanging on his wall, and get excited about it. He’d always nod and respond, “That was the biggest overtime paycheck I ever saw,” while wearing his t-shirt that read, “Actually, officer, I am a rocket scientist.”
When people learn that he worked on the Apollo 13 rescue team, they usually ask us if he was represented in the movie. Our standard answer is: “You know when Ed Harris walks into the one room, draws the moon and an X and says the astronauts are here and they’ve gotta get them home, and then the scene cuts to a cluster of guys with thick glasses and pocket protectors? He’s in that herd of nerds.”

Jason Lane
Oh man, Jason Lane. I remember way back in the day talking shop on the old site with the inimitable Michael Nash about him. For having been a reliever at USC (believe he and Ensberg were teammates) and eventually switching over to pitching full time in MLB, I don’t remember him having a great arm when he played for the Astros.
I think it was BudGirl who described him at the plate as “trying to hit himself in the back with his swing”
Dammit…I had to go look up if Jason had died.

At the only Round Rock Express game I ever attended, Jason Lane hit two homeruns and Carlos Hernandez pitched 8 shutout innings striking out 16. I knew the future was bright.
