Valdez and his agent say the Astros haven’t even approached him about an extension
Apparently Bregman’s deal has significant deferrals that bring the AAV down to 31.7M / year. Especially considering state tax impacts, it isn’t quite the overpay implied by the lifetime contract value. He will have to secure a ~25M+ per year deal after this one to come out ahead versus the Astros offer.
Graveman to the D’Backs on a 1-year deal.
I understand trying 2-3 years ago but what’s the point in trying now? No way he’s going to sign an extension this close to FA IMO.
It’s still a massive overpay. Deferring the money probably lessens the state tax burden on Bregman, making an even sweeter deal for him. Either way, the Red Sox don’t care about the tax implications. They’re still paying $120 million, plus interest, for three years of his service. That’s a an enormous overpay on their part.
Here is a list of the players who will earn $40MM this year:
Shohei Ohtani
Juan Soto
Zack Wheeler
Aaron Judge
Alex Bregman
Wow. “What’s wrong with this picture for $1,000 Alex”.
Alex isn’t even close to being in the same category as those other players. I’m not even sure that Alex is an all star. He’s a decent hitter with a good glove.

Pop Up Bregman has entered the chat.
The crux of the matter.
That contract gets his name in that company.
Nevermind that the particulars lower the real AAV to a different portion of the stratosphere. The ego must be appeased. Both Alex’s and his agent’s.
Like HH said weeks ago, if he wanted to stay in Houston he would.
He didn’t.
I thank him for his service and hope he pops out 90 billion times.
That seems like far fewer times than he popped out with the Astros.
This is it in a nutshell.
Astros have signed Brendan Rogers. Looks like he could be the starting second baseman if Altuve shifts to left and he can make the team out of camp. Appears to be a minor league deal with invite to spring training. Last season Rogers hit .267 with 13 homers for the Rockies while driving in 54. He’s a career .266 hitter across 6 seasons and is 28 years old. He can also play shortstop if necessary. He’s got a career 23% strikeout rate at the dish.
I like this signing. He’s not an all star by any means, but he gives you some flexibility and his bat is decent enough that he’s not going to be a sure out in the order when he comes up. If Altuve can hold down left and Rogers can start at second and hit .260 plus as his career numbers indicate he will, this definitely helps the bottom of the order.
Funny, I was looking at him yesterday wondering why nobody has taken a flyer on him yet and hoping the Astros would. He was once really highly regarded but some injuries and lack of development cost him. He looks like a prime “change of scenery” guy if I ever saw one. If Altuve is going to be in left, I like Rodgers as an option at 2B.
Hell.
.267 could win the batting title nowadays.
I like it too.
The man is a triple hitting machine on the road.
I…uhh… probably should have mentioned that’s across parts of six seasons.
I’m aware. Might’ve been slightly tongue in cheek.
