And for the record I understand their position and there is nothing wrong with it.
Simply a difference of philosophy. Just business.
But don’t tell us you are trying.
Tell us his requirements don’t line up with those of the organization.
Especially since he is not asking for anything that has not been given to multiple players before. He just wants what he has earned based on what others have been given.
It’s a much better offer than those made in Spring Training because of the $32M AAV, but for Correa to accept a 5 year deal, the AAV likely has to be substantially higher. Probably something closer to 5 years, 200M.
I just fail to see this offer as a serious run at keeping him. They know what he wants and what his peers around his age or younger have received (Betts, Lindor, Tatis Machado and Harper) and continue to offer five-year deals.
I hope Correa is still willing to negotiate, but I’m not holding my breath at this point. I don’t doubt that Crane will spend money to make the team better and they will be very good next year, I just would like to have Correa as the face of this franchise for a long time to come.
I know what I would do if I were an owner or a GM but I no longer feel compelled to make my thoughts public. I will admit that I will be pleasantly surprised if Carlos is an Astro next year.
I don’t think I was being clear. If the Astros moved to 6/210 already, I think it’s a sign that they really want to sign him before free agency begins, but I don’t expect that they will get him signed before free agency.
6 for 210 is a good offer. Correa would turn 33 in September of the final year of the offer, so he could get another smaller free agent deal after it concludes.
Well he is in NYC right now and he’s free to negotiate with any team tomorrow. I’m sure he’s not there to just catch a show with Maldonado. Although it’s a very serious offer, he’s not taking a 5 or 6 year deal when another team will offer 8 or 10. He’s going to cash in and lock in as many years as he can.
Yes, he is. My point is with Correa’s birthday being so late in the season (September 22), a six-year deal essentially takes him through his age 27-32 seasons. That’s part of the reason I’m not opposed to a 7 or 8 year deal. He will be 33 for 99% of year 7, and 34 for 99% of year 8.
