2022 roster

If JV accepts the QO, that will be a step forward.

That guy would be Geronimo Pena’s son. His defense is already MLB ready (no, I don’t have a number on the 80 scale), so I suppose the question is whether the organization thinks his hitting is also MLB ready.

Fan graphs has his glove at 55 with 60 potential and 50 arm

MLB pipeline has his glove at 60 and arm 55.

FTR: These are pre 2021 grades and I don’t know when they were calculated/ observed.

And his bat has already exceeded his grades

Can Jones play a major league third base? He looked more than adequate at first last year and he looked like he was ready to hit major league pitching.

I like Taylor Jones quite a bit.

I don’t know if he has the lateral movement to play third in MLB in 2022 with shifts.

However I think he may be a great option as the majority firstbaseman in 2023.

I say 86

I think no. The requirements of regular third base are minimal, but as has been said already, a third baseman also must play shortstop in the shift.

Deciding whether to keep, trade, or waive Jones will be one of the tough decisions the front office has this off season.

There are 61 minor leaguers who need to be added to the 40 man roster or exposed to the rule 5 draft.

Most of those players are either not going to be picked, or not a big loss if they are. However there are a dozen or so that must be protected.

To do that several players on the current 40 man will need to go.

I hope Jones isn’t one of those. And I REALLY hope he isn’t one of them until/unless there is another option for first in 2023 is clear.

The other option for the shift is to keep the SS in position and move 3B to the shallow RF position. Some teams do this, specifically because their third baseman can’t really cover all of the left side. The Dodgers do this with Turner, I believe, for example. But that’s not ideal, and may be problematic as much as the Astros shift.

I think the Padres do that, too.

Poor Fredia!

But that does remind me we forgot to honor the winner of this year’s Race For The Lid so thank you for that.

I don’t know if that’s the real offer, but if Carlos takes that I’ll drink champagne from a tennis shoe.

It’s a good offer but not one that’s likely to get the job done.

There Is no way that he accepts this but maybe it’s a large enough offer that he counters.

I guess Crane and Click have not figured out yet that it’s more years that he wants, not more AAV

$32M is a good AAV but he’ll get at least eight years at that rate, probably ten.

They are aware I’m sure but hoping that more aav would trump the years. Gonna take at least 7 or 8 years if not as many as 10

That’s a legit offer. Hopefully 8 years a little north of 200 gets the job done eventually.

They know exactly what they are doing.

I know.

They are going to keep throwing 5 and maybe 6 year offers at him when they know nothing short of 8, maybe 10 years will even be considered.

Hopefully they can get creative and maybe add a couple of opt outs that will at least make it worth considering.
