We lost a good one this week. Not anyone famous, but one of those people to whom everyone who met him took an instant liking. He was a doyen of the Houston energy insurance industry for decades. A gentleman to deal with; brutally honest, but he had a folksy charm and razor sharp wit such that you couldnât take offense to the truth bombs he would lob at you.
As a broker, I lost count of the number of times I offered a risk to him and his initial response was along the lines of âwhy the fuck would I want to write that shit?â Those of us who had the pleasure of working with him over the years knew that this meant he was interested but there was some negotiating to be done. Or it meant that he wasnât going to fucking write that shit. It was fun finding out which.
He was retired and in his 70s, but the manner of his passing is both shocking and yet totally in character. Hereâs part of the message the family put out:
Until 2 days ago, John had no known enemies. Sometime this past Monday, some asshole drove his vehicle up to the rental house John and his family were living in, told them that was his house and ordered them to get out!
Although John was almost blind, he managed to get his wife and son out of the house and then pushed them in one direction while he distracted the asshole in his direction. The asshole ran over John with his vehicle, killing John almost instantly. Some shots were fired and the asshole is now in jail.

Iâm seeing many stories being shared. Hereâs one thatâs very representative:
Spent 11 years working with him. Great man. I finished college working for him. Navigators didnât have a tuition reimbursement program but Jones did. I put tuition on my corporate card and Jones signed it.
Terry Hall, lead singer of The Specials died today, aged 63.
