Chad Donato promoted from Hooks. 11th rounder in '16 out of WVU had 25 Ks vs just 3 BBs in 20 IP this year with a 1.05 WHIP.
Based on his press a year ago, surprised the A’s exposed this guy to the draft:
"…Given his arsenal, this success should not be a surprise. While he had a four pitch mix as a college starter, Martinez was also considered undersized, not likely to hold up to a major league workload. However, with his sinker/slider combination and excellent command, he had all the makings of a ground ball generating reliever, a profile that he has fulfilled thus far in his bullpen journey.
Chances are, Martinez is still a year or so away from making his major league debut. He may well return to AA, where a hot start could lead to a promotion to AAA. With the A’s being ever budget conscious, finding a solid relief option in their system would be a bonus."
Upon the Astros draft of Seth, his former pitching coach (pitching coach Jim Clem) freely shared his opinions.
There is nothing in that article that explains a 2 Ks per IP start that he has had with the Skeeters. That article points to a undersized reliever who gets ground balls. If this continues, it may be another example of the Astros excellent pitching development folks.
Brett Conine was named AAA West pitcher of the month for May. Went 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA in four games over 19 innings. His WHIP was also 0.95.
I saw him pitch on Monday and other than a first inning run he did a good job keeping the Isotopes off balance. Siri had a big go ahead hit and looked pretty good in the outfield. He made a few difficult running catches look easy with a good jump, though my mind’s eye was always comparing him to Straw.
The Skeeters lost 15-2 and all 4 affiliates combined lost by a 51-17 score tonight.
Touched on this in another thread talking about Jake Meyers. Sugar Land has played 44 games thus far with 11 of those contests (or 25%) played in super hitter friendly parks in Albuquerque and El Paso. Here’s the home/road splits for Skeeter hitters and how in particular those 2 parks have benefited them:
(home OPS/road OPS)
Jake Meyers (.731/1.259) – .412 BA in ABQ/EP with 9 of his 13 home runs hit in those 2 parks
Jose Siri (.645/1.129) – .442 BA in ABQ/EP with 5 of his 8 home runs hit there
Bryan De La Cruz (.795/.953) – .412 BA in ABQ/EP with 2 of his 6 home runs and 6 of his 11 doubles hit there
Mike Papierski (.704/.990) – .366 BA in ABQ/EP with 1 of his 2 home runs hit there
Ronnie Dawson (.766/.870) – .370 BA in ABQ/EP with 1 of his 2 home runs and 5 of his 9 doubles hit there
CJ Hinojosa (.537/.889) – .400 BA in ABQ/EP with 6 of his 13 doubles hit there
SL has 12 games remaining on the schedule in those two parks with 76 games overall yet to play.
My son and I are headed to our first Skeeters game later this month… Anything we should know in advance (where to sit, that sort of thing)?
Whadda joke!
BA analyzing Bryan De La Cruz mirrors what I’ve been saying about virtually all the Skeeter hitters’ stats…
Hidden
…but De La Cruz did most of his damage on the road in extremely hitter-friendly conditions. He hit .358 with 10 home runs and a 1.015 OPS on the road compared to .271 with two home runs and a .672 OPS at home. De La Cruz is a good fastball hitter and has gotten better at driving the ball in the air as he’s matured and gotten stronger. He’s a corner outfielder who can play center field in a pinch, so he needs to show he can consistently tap into that power when he’s not playing in launching pads like Albuquerque and El Paso.
Any word on how Bregman is doing on his rehab stint? I saw some results of the first 1 or 2 games and they were considerably short of awe inspiring.
He doesn’t need to get hits
He needs to stay healthy
And secondly he needs to make solid contact.
Bregman struck out in his first at bat
Then was replaced for a pinch hitter after playing the field.
