Thanks.
Hamstring tightness
Click was on the Sunday radio pregame. Indicated that Pena will likely make it back by the end of the AAA season now that they have extended the season until the end of September.
Played his first rehab game in WPB today. Started at SS and then left the game after 2 ABs.
In yesterday’s game went 2-3 and reached on a HBP while stealing a base for the FCL club.
I know it’s bound to happen occasionally but don’t want him to be getting HBP at WPB. I hope his wrist is protected.
OKC Dojers jumped out to an 11-0 lead.
Skeeters came back to win 12-11.
LHP Jonathan Bermudez was outstanding in his AAA debut last night…
Bermudez did not make either the BA or MLB midseason update Top 30 Prospects list despite being in the top three in the AA Central in ERA (3.32), WHIP (1.18) and strikeouts (106). Those whiffs came in just 78.2 IP while walking just 21.
After a 2+ week rehab stint with the FCL club, Jeremy Pena made his AAA debut with the Skeeters tonight. Went 0-4 with a pair of whiffs and a walk.
I am, more and more accepting that Correa is gone.
But I would still be overjoyed if he resigns.
I’m expecting a Leon and Pena spring training battle for the starting shortstop job with a very low cost MLB veteran signed as insurance in case neither rookies are ready. If one wins the job the veteran is released or traded before the season starts.
I am kind of the same thinking. I really like Pena and his defense. He has also shown offensive skills, It hurt him being out injured so long this year. He is a very promising prospect.
Just glad he is back. wonder if he gets called up when they expand the roster. H e hasn’t had much playing time this year, and none other than ST.
No way.
Only 40 man players can be called up and only expand from 26 to 28. Urquidy will be 1 callup.
He could be an AFL candidate but I have not heard if it will be a thing this year
Yes, Arizona Fall League returns this year. Slated to begin Oct. 13.
I would expect to see Pena playing there.
How about Correa the Younger? Is he a candidate for the AFL?
How good is he supposed to be?
How about Correa the Younger? Is he a candidate for the AFL?
He’s had a helluva season so yeah I think he could be a candidate for the AFL.
But there’s a practical reason why he might not be sent. Five MLB orgs staff each team in the AFL and of the 7-8 players each org sends there are usually 3-4 pitchers, maybe a catcher, 1-2 infielders and an outfielder. So with Pena almost a certainty to go and one of the other 4 orgs perhaps wanting to send a shortstop there isn’t gonna be a whole lot of reps available at that particular position. And I would add that Pedro Leon due to his missed time with the broken finger is a far more likely candidate (among other reasons) to be sent to the AFL compared to Correa. And with Pena there Leon would also have trouble getting playing time at short but at least for him he could get lots of playing time in CF.
Yes Correa could still be sent and get reps at the remaining infield positions and in LF (just like he’s been doing so far this year with 48 starts at those positions and 32 at short). But I think there are more likely position player candidates the Astros might send such as outfielder Alex McKenna who like in 2019 has missed significant playing time due to injury. Another more likely candidate is 3B Joe Perez who has played a full season this year but is behind in his development due to missing so much time to injuries and the pandemic over the previous four years.
So Correa a possibility? Yes. Likely? I doubt it.
I would agree that there are many others that the organization will and should send instead of Correa the Younger.
There are many, like the ones Walt_Bond mentioned who will be up against rule 5 protection decisions and need the exposure and experience.
Correa, while not gifted with his brother physique ( listed 6’ 219) is definitely a prospect in his own right.
This is his first season in minor league ball.
He started at Fayetteville and was great. 870 OPS while maintaining 12% K rate and 11% BB rate. 255PA
He earned a promotion to Asheville and has been able to increase that OPS to 915 in 127PA. His K rate has risen to 14%, understandable and acceptable with the promotion but his BB rate falling to 3% is troubling. Hopefully it’s just part of the adjustment to older mire experienced competition.
He isn’t much of a base stealer yet though he tries. He was 7 of 14 at Fayetteville and is 2 of 4 since the promotion.
According to Baseball Reference, he was 7 months older than average for A ball and is 9 months younger than average for high A.
