2021 roster

Raley not activated.

Either he is very ill or now requires a rehab stint.

I donā€™t think you can proclaim with any certainty that heā€™s very ill. Fair to say that itā€™s highly likely he tested positive for covid and has two more days left in the quarantine protocol before he is eligible to come off the list.

Great point. Thanks.

You are right, of course, if he tested positive he must remain in quarantine for 10 days even if he is symptom free.

If a player is ill he does not need to remain on the IL the entire 10 days unless he tests positive.

Whatā€™s the protocol if somebody in his immediate family is ill?

I believe that if a player is in close contact to someone with COVID they must be inactivated until they have a negative test.

I do not think there is any change from pre-COVID policies if they are close to a person who is ill with something else.

Although they are very careful to rule out COVID before doing one or the other.

If a player is in close contact with a confirmed case of covid, the player must quarantine for a minimum of 7 days and must test negative on day 5 or later before they can rejoin the team. That may have been the case with Correa.

Austin Pruitt DFAā€™d to make room for Rafael Montero (who in turn had been DFAā€™d by the Mariners before being included in the Graveman trade).

Well, before he got released, Iā€™m glad Dusty used him in the 7th in a tie game where he gave up the winning home run.

That opens up a spot on the 40-man. Hmmmm.

to make room for Rafael Montero

Iā€™m aware but that still leaves an open roster spotā€¦filled by Yimi Garcia!

No it doesnā€™t.

The 40-man is full. Another move will be necessary to make room for Yimi.

That is incorrect.

Yesterdayā€™s trade took two guys off the 40-man and added two. No net change. Now the DFA of Pruitt has no relation to Monteroā€™s spot on the 40-man roster. Thereā€™s still one spot open, filled by Yimi Garcia.

I believe you are indeed correct sir. I mis-counted.

What do you all think these trades say about the likelihood of Josh James and/or Pedro Baez being activated at any point this season?

I think we will see them at some point, but I simply think it was too big a gamble to believe they were going to pitch well enough to count on come crunch time.

One good thing though about both of them. If they are effective, their arms should be fresh. Could be important.

James still has options so thereā€™s a good chance he spends the rest of the year with Sugar Land. Unless heā€™s not still not right physically, I canā€™t imagine Baez not being with the Astros.

Agreed. I am counting on Baez; not counting on James at all.

If Baez can return before September ( should easily) and pitch to his historical averages the Astros should have a much better bullpen than the first 100 games of the year.

And even a better bullpen than the 2017 and 2019 post seasons.

Many many issues during the playoffs those teams.

Better than 17 for sure. Better depth than 19 maybe. The backend is still a bit weaker imo. Hard to beat Pressly/Osuna as the 8/9 guys
