2021 roster

Siri’s mechanics are a bit, well, mechanical.

You have to be careful about giving Siri the signs, he’s been known to accidentally tell everyone about them

“I didn’t get that. Could you try again?”

I know two people actually named “Siri”. They’re pretty fucking tired of the questions.

Think about someone named Alexa.

I continue to so not hold my breath…

And here’s a free article from MLBTR which covers some of the same ground…

I just had a thought on Verlander wake me up at 5:30 in the morning ( don’t judge we are all fans)

I have no idea if this is even possible or what the logistics of it would be. There are probably not even precedents but I would like to know if any of you have knowledge.

Sign Verlander to a 3 yr $60 mil. contract that voids his current deal. They can give him whatever trade protection he wants and, maybe, even discount the first year because of the financial crunch- just don’t alter the annual average.

It saves the Astros $13 mil to bolster the 2021 roster.

Why Verlander does it: It gives him $27 mil and a contract for 2 more years when otherwise he would need to find a team and sign an incentive laden deal for much less while he comes back from TJS.

Why Astros do it: They have money coming off the books in 2022 but this is their year if they will win a 2nd WS with this core.

MLB would approve it in a heartbeat because it establishes a precedent to voiding contracts.

Union approves it because of respect for Verlander and the additional 2 years and $27 mil he gets when otherwise he could be playing for $5 mil on 1 yr deal.

What are your thoughts?

Not only do the Astros not sign him but he goes to a division rival…

My thoughts are you should leave the anchovies off your next late-night pizza.

Anchovies belong in tomato sauce, that’s it.

2021 already off to a better start for Bryan Abreu compared to 2020.

This year…

Last year…

Baker said Abreu was putting too much pressure on himself and also reported to Summer Camp overweight and out of shape.

If Abreu returns to the form he showed before last year, he can help this team a lot.

MLB has posted line up / rotation projections for each team - no writer is taking credit and no explanation given of how they arrived at these lineups. Here is the Houston projection:

ASTROS

  1. Jose Altuve, 2B
  2. Alex Bregman, 3B
  3. Michael Brantley, LF
  4. Carlos Correa, SS
  5. Kyle Tucker, RF
  6. Yordan Alvarez, DH
  7. Yuli Gurriel, 1B
  8. Martín Maldonado, C
  9. Myles Straw, CF

Rotation

  1. Zack Greinke, RHP
  2. Lance McCullers Jr., RHP
  3. Framber Valdez, LHP
  4. Jose Urquidy, RHP
  5. Cristian Javier, RHP

Closer: Ryan Pressly, RHP

That’s pretty much the lineup most of would have, though possibly give Straw a shot at leadoff. I’d probably flip Alvarez and Tucker too.

I like Bregman leading off better than Altuve. He takes pitches and gets on more. Altuve needs to return to hitting. Without thinking about taking pitches.

Straw would be the traditional option and Dusty might give him a try. He hit leadoff as often as anywhere last year.

I wouldn’t put Tucker and Alvarez together. Put a RH bat like Correa between them.

I would never, never, never bat Altuve leadoff. I think the R-L-R stuff is bullshit. How do the LHH hit LHP? That is what matters.

Similar to not needing LH pitchers, for the sake of them being LH.

The organization ( at least under Luhnow/Hinch) agrees.

I think much of the hitting balance still has to do with how it makes the other team react and make choices as it does results.
