I was there. Shit tons of people. Hot. And we were far enough back to not really see anyone.
That’s was outstanding. I loved watching Robert Flores give shit to Mark DeRosa on MLB Network this Postseason. And I like Mark DeRosa.
Saw Dusty’s postgame presser on you tube.
One of the first questions asked “was there a sense of relief to finally win a WS?”
Dusty said no, other feelings but relief was not one of them.
That whole exchange underscores the drive to have “the narrative”. Every pundit and broadcaster made Dusty’s missing title the central theme of the WS. The upshot of it is they’re saying you’re not validated until we say you are.
Turns out Dusty has been living a full baseball life and a full life without their approval. And when he won, he was happy. And he’s still the same person today he was Saturday morning and knows the exact same stuff about baseball today as he did then too. His team just won one more game and made him, and us, very very happy.
One interesting thing to me in one of his interviews was being asked “What was your most difficult decision of the Series?” He thought a minute and answered: “My decision to leave McCullers in to save the bullpen in Game 3. I knew I would get ridiculed for it, but Lance owned it.”
Among the things he told the players before champagne started flying was: “You played your asses off. I didn’t do shit.”
I saw a historian analyzing one of Julius Ceasar’s battles.
Caesar had a strong defensive position. The enemy had superior numbers and tried to goad the Romans into engaging them.
But the historian noted that one of Ceasar’s traits was that when he had a tactical advantage he was extremely patient. So of course he waited for the enemy to commit mistakes and won.
Conceding a game in a tied WS might not be an advisable strategy but Urquidy did his part and the rest of the team did theirs.
The Phillies scored a total of 3 runs the rest of the series.
This jumped out at me.
It is what he said.
This was a fantastic read.
Apologies in advance if it’s paywall protected.
What jumped out is he said ridiculed rather than criticized.
And he’s right.
On an aside we were traveling yesterday. I was decked out in my orange Altuve jersey and Astros cap. A guy on the shuttle bus congratulated me and said that he lived in the same community as Dusty.
I could tell he was mostly just pleased for Dusty but he was polite.
I did not much like her acceptance of the Manfred 2017 narrative. The rest was great.
I have to believe the Astros will continue to get booed on the road. Not because of the “cheating,” though the booing may have started from that, the boos now and in the future will be happening because the Astros probably just kicked the boo-bird’s team’s butt.
Spoke to my cousin this morning, who is about 10 years older than me, and he retired last year but he’s always been a baseball nut. He grew up in Detroit following the Tigers and as a kid I got to watch a game at the old Tiger stadium. About 20 years ago he and his family moved to Houston and quickly adopted the Astros and when we acquired Verlander that sealed the deal, he was all in.
So in his first year of retirement he decided to become an usher for the Astros and he has a nice section, right behind home plate shaded to the first base line. I asked the obvious, are you getting a ring and he confirmed he was and it will even be engraved with his name but they have to sign an agreement that they won’t sell it, which he never would in a million years.
Anyway, such a great gesture by Crane to take care of all the employees and I’ve heard him mention it twice in interviews over the last couple of days “we have excellence from the top all the way to the bottom.”
One other note I asked him if he had any cool stories and he said not really although he said in game 3 against Seattle when Yordan was at bat he told a fan “Can you imagine if he hits one out, the roof of this place will blow off.” The rest, as they say, is history.
Game 1.
Ouch, you’re right, it’s all a blur to me. It was game 1 but felt like game 3 as I don’t think the Mariners ever recovered.
Game 3 was 1-0, 18 innings, in Seattle
Which one of you threw the beer can at Ted Cruz?
I don’t understand why there was only one.
Mmmm…these tears are delicious!
Yeah, it would have been a whole case.
