Has anybody been to Montreal lately? I’m thinking about escaping the August heat for a few days, and I’ve always been interested by that city. Fwiw, between my wife and me, our French is good enough to survive. Any food/lodging/sightseeing tips that anybody has are appreciated!
I haven’t been there in 20 years but it is a delightful place. The vast majority of people there are bilinguals. The women are beautiful. The weather should be quite pleasant. The food was excellent. I could easily live there in the summer.

We were there for about two nights and a day at the end of May, passing through to the Gaspe Peninsula. I liked it but was a little overwhelmed with all of the choices. We didn’t have a car. I was really surprised at how much French was spoken, but almost everyone also spoke English, so my French–which is none–was fine. We stayed downtown at the Place d’Armes, and it was fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to stay there again, but I would stay there again if nothing else caught my fancy. It was next door to the Notre Dame Basilica, which is beautiful and shouldn’t be missed. The museum of art was interesting but small. We ate dinner at Annette Bar a Vin, which was kinda informal and moderately expensive and ok, and at Restaurant Tocque which was more formal and more expensive and very good. Kris had had knee surgery, so we didn’t spend any time in the big park area. we started too late to make restaurant reservations at any of the Michelin star restaurants, but there are several in the Michelin guide.
I’m there at least once per year. It’s the closest big city for me. The walled old town is great. Not Quebec City- great but great nonetheless. Every time I go, I go to a small all-you-can-eat sushi bar that serves you with waist-high smiling robots. I’ll dig the name up and drop it here. Along with a few other sights/activities worth considering.
The weather is indeed sublime. Even a showery summer day is still awesome.
