Travel 2021

Many times. I have a “road not taken” story about that long rail journey I may tell you on PM.

I saw a meme a couple of months ago, it was Paulie Walnuts making a Paulie Walnuts argumentative face and gesturing forcefully, the text read AIN’T NO WAY THAT WHOLE ORCHESTRA’S TRANS!

We’re going to drive to Louisville Ky in a week or so, via Nashville and Little Rock. Any advice?

You probably don’t want to stop in Little Rock; the Arkansas Legislature is in session and believe me you don’t want to go near that.

Also, they fixed that big-ass crack in the I-40 bridge over the Mississippi River, so you should be good there.

If you happen to be in Hot Springs for St. Patrick’s Day, we always have the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s parade, like 100 feet. There’s going to be a street dance afterward with Foghat playing, so big times.

We used to drive my mother-in-law from Houston to Arkansas every May and go pick her up in September (she was from there and visiting her sisters). This is what it’s like to have Texas plates whilst driving through Arkansas:

Keep your doors locked and drive fast.

hahaha, that’s the truth.

But man you should see downtown Hot Springs fill up with Texas license plates and jaywalkers during Texas Spring Break. Everyone in Hot Springs knows when Texas Spring Break starts, because that’s the beginning of our tourist season.

I went to Hot Springs once. It was peculiar.

I think about half of my 1800s ancestors came to Texas through Arkansas, and my dad grew up in Texarkana. I’ve spent some time there–really all over the state. Bentonville is now pretty nice, but otherwise the food pretty much sucks. What is the deal with chocolate gravy? One of the worst mistakes I ever made was eating Mexican food in Arkansas.

I’ll always think of Arkansas first and foremost as the home of Black Oak Arkansas.

Yeah there isn’t much good food. The catfish is pretty good, but it’s catfish. I don’t know what’s with the chocolate gravy; it sounds unholy so I never tried it.

It’s worse than you can imagine.

ETA: It might be better if they put chili in it.

I really enjoyed the Louisville Slugger Museum on one of my trips to Louisville.

Do you live in Hot Springs? There is a great pizza place downtown Hot Springs.

I have a book about the '69 Texas/Arkansas shootout and that was like a war zone if you had a vehicle with Texas plates. Apparently even buying gas was an event. I’ve never had any problems though in many trips through the state.

Yep, I live near Hot Springs. There is Deluca’s, which may be the place you’ve heard of. I haven’t been there yet … you have to call ahead to reserve your pizza dough.

There is a place like that in Comfort, Texas… and it’s hands down the best pizza I’ve ever eaten.

I had jalapeño wine in Comfort, TX. It tasted exactly how you expect it would.

Seconded. Stopped there on a trip from Texas to Pennsylvania a few years ago – definitely worth the visit.

That’s it…Deluca’s. It is outstanding. Good beer selections, too.

I haven’t been but they are considered the best in town. They recently moved to a new place on Central, at the other end of downtown.

I’m sitting in the airport having just returned from our first cruise. Took the kids for Spring Break on the Disney Dream to the Bahamas for a 4 day cruise.

I was very hesitant about booking the trip - I thought a cruise would be claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I could not have been more wrong, and I’m already looking at booking our next cruise.
