Trade Deadline 2023

According to Nightengale if the 25 option vests, the Astros will pay Verlander 29 through 2025

Some portion of the money is contingent on the option vesting

Yes, I believe it does. Money you are receiving from other teams is on the bottom line of the team breakdown of roster resource I think.

$54 million back. Amazing trade. Thank you Clifford and Gilbert for your services.

The New York #Mets are sending the #Astros about $54 million in the Justin Verlander trade, one executive said, if Verlander’s $35 million option in 2025 becomes vested. Verlander is owed about $93 million, meaning the #Astros would pay Verlander about $29 million for 2 1/3 years

Only the money the Astros pay counts towards the CBT. The Mets payment will count toward theirs despite him no longer on their team.

That’s even better. $29M over 2.3 years with the massive vesting safety net built into next year if he falls off a cliff. And very little impact on the luxury tax.

“The Mets are paying $35M on Verlander for this year and next year, then half of the $35M in 2025 if the option triggers.”

If accurate, what a deal!!!

Amazing work from Dana & Co. ~30 Mil for 2.5 years of JV.

Now even the naysayers should be happy.

Don’t count on it.

JV likely enters the Hall in blue and orange, now.

Well, my know nothing opinion is Tucker does not want an extension. He wants FA so this trade does not impact him at all.

I did not say you are a naysayer. I respect your baseball posts.

So, in simple math relating to yearly salary, the Astros are getting him for $7.7M for the balance of this year and for $15.3M for next year.

Totally agree, and I had the same thought. Great minds.

Thanks. Back at you.

Man, y’all are brave, doing math in public.

Thought some of you might like this analogy from the Fangraphs analysis of the trade:

Verlander pitching for a team that wasn’t the Astros just felt kind of odd . While he certainly didn’t spend the bulk of his career in Houston, it’s where he had his personal pitching renaissance, where he clinched his future Hall of Fame membership, and where he got his championship rings. Verlander in blue-and-orange felt like that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which Jean-Luc Picard is kind of a sad-sack 60-year-old ensign because he didn’t get in a bar fight as a youngster.

12 years in Detroit and would be 8 in Houston. Looks like that might be right if he continues to produce and notches #300 in a Houston uniform. His extended spring training in Flushing is a momentary blip…

Hmmm…maybe.

Seems like I irritated someone. Fancy that.
