From “my friend” in reference to another Twitter report linking Hader to Astros.
This is the third report linking the Astros to Josh Hader.
I have heard very little about this - a few weeks ago I heard that the Astros checked in on both Hader and Snell, but that was it.
I don’t see how this logistically works unless the Padres have privately decided to sell rentals. I don’t know why they would do that with their run differential and talent, they are only 3 out of the WC, and just kicked the **** out of the Rangers.
Even as a rental, Hader would be expensive because he would be wanted by at least a dozen teams - he is arguably the best reliever in baseball this season and can go multiple innings.
The only real I can think of would be in the Padres covert someone specifically in the Astros system. It would still likely cost Gilbert to add Josh Hader.
Maybe it is worth it - it would allow the Astros to only get 4 innings out of the starters before going to Neris/Graveman/Abreu/Pressly/Harder in the playoffs… couple that with strong defense and a potentially explosive offense, and that is a recipe to win the AL and match up against the Braves or Dodgers.
I will ask about Hader, but I am skeptical of these reports.
The Klesko comparison is a bit unfair. Clifford looks like a much better athlete.
Not surprised by the interest in Baez. I read something several months ago that he may have the best pure power (and maybe swing) in the system.
FWIW, both of those guys seem like better prospects than Gilbert. So, if trading him is what needs to happen to get a Flaherty, JV, or even Hader, make it so.
Crisco: 1) current Padres OF/1b Ryan Klesko for reasons which should be obvious. 2) See also Donut Truck .
Donut Truck: 1) current Padres OF Ryan Klesko, for his resemblance to a square, unwieldly vehicle when running the bases or chasing down a ball in left field. 2) See also Crisco .
Agreed. Drew Gilbert better not be traded for a rental reclamation project like Jack Flaherty. The Cardinals can either not trade Flaherty and try to extend him or get a comp pick if they extend the qualifying offer, or take whatever they are offered now. Their choice.
He only should be discussed for significant upgrades with multiple years of club control.
