The sci-fi TV thread

Seventeen days?? Hey, man, I don’t want to rain on your parade but we’re not going to last seventeen hours!!

60 years ago today, this happened for the very first time:

Thunderbirds was a big part of my childhood, hence my fandom bordering on fanaticism. Sunday dinner simply had to be over in time to catch the “Five!” of the intro; which meant at least 5 minutes before show time because the TV needed to warm up.

If you want to get a sense of it all, it just so happens that the S1 E1 episode “Trapped in the Sky” is one of the best of the entire show. They do a great job of introducing you to the whole premise without bogging down the story.

See why this created such a fuss and endures to this day:

I believe the entire run of the show is available on YouTube and Tubi. It’s 32 episodes total, thanks to the criminally truncated 2nd season after it was cut because it wasn’t taken up by US network TV.

Fireball XL5 is what I grew up watching, sitting 3’ in front of our b/w Zenith.

Plur1bus is entertaining and an intriguing premise and very well made (but that goes without saying for Apple TV+ productions). Two episodes in, and I have absolutely no idea where is going though, because it’s hard to imagine where it might go.

Mild Spoilers

I love that they have cherry-picked and melded some classic tin foil-hattery with a splash of Scientology, in that it’s a signal from space aliens that spurs scientists to create an RNA modification that is spread via chemtrails and ends up being total mind control of the human race.

One of the features that I like is how none of the “changed” humans ever talk to each other because they don’t need to. For example when the “Pirate Lady” jumps into a C130 she doesn’t put on a headset and the ground controller at the other end doesn’t make any hand signals. It all adds to the spookiness of the situation.

If this doesn’t call @Limey forth I don’t know what will:

I really like the first two episodes of Starfleet Academy. Which was a totally pleasant surprise. It’s like West Wing meets Hogwarts meets Star Trek. Just a lot to like. It’s also an incredibly attractive show.

Knox–i will give it a watch based on your recommendation. Holly Hunter’s presence almost got me there.

Also–if any of you weirdos are into table top rpgs I’ve been playing a fantastic system called MOTHERSHIP that is a science fiction horror game (alien(s), the thing, event horizon are touch points). Started playing these games online recently and have been having a blast. I HATE d&d, which is what 90% of the people in the hobby want to play. Coivd has increased people playing these things online. Yesterday i played HONEY HEIST (bears attempt to steal honey) with people in england, india, and 3 us states.

Finally got around to Andor season 2.

I really enjoyed both seasons, particularly the way they added depth to the Star Wars universe. Galaxy. Whatever.

Performances of both Rebels and Imperials were excellent.

Season 2 might have been a bit more plodding than season 1 but the payoff in the last several episodes was worth it for me.

We’ve been watching this at your suggestion. It’s likable.

We watched episode 8 or something last night.

I am running out of steam. I liked it so much when Star Trek was cool stories about sci-Fi stuff and teamwork and friendships. It feels almost pathological now how each episode is relentlessly about self-discovery and/or trauma.

You have the cosmos and you’re gazing at your navel! Ugh!

I subscribe to the “Star Trek is a place” theory that says there’s room to tell lots of different stories in that universe. I still want my Star Trek + West Wing political show. So on that principle I am in favor of having shows like Starfleet Academy.

I’m still not sure I actually like Starfleet Academy though (I’m a couple episodes behind), and the whole “let’s sit down and work through our traumas” bit that started in Discovery and keeps popping up ever since is getting quite old.

This is also a show purposefully geared towards kids and young adults, and that’s ok. I don’t have to like everything (see: Star Wars)

I’m gonna leave ST Academy for others.

My cup of Star Trek tea is more along the lines of Strange New Worlds.

I get that and I hope it works and they become lifelong Star Trek fans but I don’t think kids/YA audiences would reject a show more along the substantive lines of a TNG. I sure didn’t!

A compelling narrative is evergreen.

I’m just feeling grumpy about the endless navel gazing.

We are what we consume, and we keep feeding each other such nonsense.

It’s all good…as was mentioned a bit ago: give me more Strange New Worlds and Andors and such for us grownups

Yes, please.

Problem is, even the last season of Strange New Worlds was pretty uneven for me. And then they announced season 4 is going to have a puppet episode and I’m in a borderline panic.

Oh man.

I just started season 3.

Puppets?

Ok, we can get thru this.

Can’t we?

We got thru odd numbered movies, we can do this.
