The sci-fi TV thread

I’ve always thought that Disney’s “The Black Hole” should be remade.

“The Last Starfighter” as well

I think the latter is being done. Such a great premise.

I still can’t believe Disney made something that dark. It gave me nightmares as a kid.

Secret of Nihm was the one that got me.

The original Last Starfighter is so goddamn great. Always wanted to see a remake done properly.

If I remember correctly, the special effects were done with the original Cray supercomputer.

ETA - yep.

I am continuing my Netflix DareDevil journey, and I now feel dirty for having said nice things about the Disney version.

I have pre-ordered this. “Now in 4:3” is a hilarious boast, but legitimate nonetheless.

I need help.

Disney is working on “restored” versions of the Star Wars OT for a theatrical release to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Wars in 2027 (which conveniently falls just before the release of Star Wars: Starfighter).

How pissed are fans going to be when Rey’s force ghost shows up at the end of Jedi?

I would have assumed that by “restored” they meant it was the original unaltered storyline, and they are just doing frame by frame scans and edit to get it to 8KHDR. I would watch that multiple times in an IMAX theater.

That would make total sense. That is why I’m verrrrry skeptical.

Looking forward to this:

Happy Alien: Earth Day (hopefully).

I have been seeing lots of good things said about this show, but that doesn’t mean anything the way “influencers” get paid to pimp shows and movies these days.

First two episodes hit Hulu today, and are being broadcast on FX starting at 7pm.

That eyeball thing is fucking disturbing.

Beyond that creepy fucking eyeball thing™️, Alien: Earth is intriguing. The world is fully fascist (so not too a distant or unimaginable future) with four companies who have divided up the Earth as well as, seemingly, the known universe. They do a great job of providing motivation for why anyone would want to capture a hostile alien species; not that any kind of retcon was needed, but it fleshes out why and that’s welcome.

The retro-future look drops you right back into the original movie, with the deep space “research” ship being based heavily on the Nostromo, especially the interiors which are a near like-for-like remake. Calling the way the scenes on the ship are shot an “homage” is not even coming close to how they mimic the original in almost every detail (in a good way).

The basic premise appears to be simple: hostile, invasive alien species (multiple) loose on Earth. But the corporate dick-measuring and desire to capture - not kill - such species is going to be bad news for a lot of red shirts, which is basically every non-CEO human being on the planet.

A minor quibble on that front is that the “Alien” alien is shown ripping through half-a-dozen people in seconds flat yet, when it comes to one of our protagonists, he decides to play with his food. There’s plot armor, and then there’s this 9" thick steel plate plot armor.

Overall, though, the set up is intriguing, it’s well acted/directed and they nailed the look of the franchise like Luke nailing an exhaust port (NTTAWWT).

Rollerball is totally set in the Alien universe…

Holy Shit! In Alien Earth, Prodigy’s right-hand man is played by Ade Edmondson.

Yes…that Ade Edmondson!

I did not recognize him, at all. The young ones aren’t.

Still love it. Neil got me to try lentils. Had never heard of them.
