The sci-fi TV thread

Blade Runner is one of my top two most favorite movies of all time (the other is A River Runs Through It - go ahead and start the hate now) and I had super high expectations for Blade Runner 2049 but I just could not get that into it. Like almost flop territory for me.

Give 2049 another go; it gets better on repeat watching. Also, Ana de Armas.

I did watch Blade Runner 2049 - before and after my stroke - and it is 4 stars. 3 times before and 3 times after.

So, Disco E6. So much stupidity, but I am torn. What is more stupid: being in a room where the air was being sucked out and leaving open flames burning, or the fact that those flames kept burning even once all the air was gone?

This makes me very happy that I have no inclination to follow this series.

The Expanse never would have let that happen.

In E7, Moll escapes, Book figures out where she is but is persuaded that it’s more important to mind-meld with a room key and so does that without passing on Moll’s whereabouts?

He does a bit of brain traveling, and then goes after Moll and she’s still there. This is basic plot and pacing stuff.

Space Bonnie and Space Clyde really should have been vaporized in their first encounter.

The tactical blunders every week are too numerous to detail, but the ONE security guy watches the doctor drop the field, sees Bonnie bolt, hears Clyde yell “now” and does … that’s right, nothing.

Plus they were standing 8 feet away when they hatched their plan. The non-Micheal characters in this show are as effective as early 2000s NPCs.

And a small quibble: when the other federation ships come to the ‘rescue’ they line up shoulder to shoulder in tight formation RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GIANT ENEMY SHIP. (small quibble because by rights Disco and the Feds should have been toast long before; Bad Uncle only thought of using his nephew’s death after it happened? Richard III is rolling over in his unearthed grave)

I have seen Michael magic a new phaser when her original one was knocked away. No one else does this, they magic in a first one but, if disarmed, they’re just now phaserless.

It’s like Waldo pointed out about the personal transporters: the tech is too powerful for the plot so they just ignore it half the time.

The Expanse S5 really takes off.

Disco E8 really kicks up its Disconess (Discocity?) to 11. There’s actually three separate ticking clocks in this one, and yet, half the run time is about exploring Burnham’s life, experiences and motivations.

It’s hilariously ironic then that, when the space librarian wants to talk about touchy-feely stuff, they tell her to stfu because there’s a crisis going on. Twice.

Any mid-countdown therapy sessions must be for Burnham and only Burnham it seems.

It’s such a shame to hear these reviews. I really liked the first two seasons and even liked/appreciated a lot of season three. But things got so bad afterward that I didn’t even finish season four, and it sounds like it’s only gotten worse from there.

I loved that the librarian said “don’t worry about the Breen, we’ve got this” making you think they must have some kick ass technology.

Nope, their defenses were shite.

Also peak Disco that the test was for Micheal to “know” herself by basically undergoing psychoanalysis when all the analysis revealed is just how paper thin her character really is. (Disco Law #1: in a crisis? Better take time out to emote)

Now they’re going to limp to the finish where they’ll battle the Breen, Disco will win but they’ll graciously revive Space Clyde who will be a noble leader for the Breen and ride off in the sunset with Space Bonnie.

I actually lost count of how many timers there were in this episode. Then, right at the end, they set running another one, which has another one ready to go right at its end.

Countdowns are a trope/cliché, but they’re still frequently used because they are so effective. The way Disco uses them, though, is like how I make breakfast.

I’ve turned on the espresso machine so I have about a minute to feed the cats before it’s up to temperature. Come on people! Now that I’ve started the extraction process, I have 20 seconds to get some milk from the fridge, fill the frothing jug and return the carton. Let’s go! Now I’ve started the steam, I have about 30 seconds to dump the coffee puck and rinse the extractor handle before it’s up to full pressure. We’re running out of time!

I could go on, but you get the picture.

I have superior firepower and you are unable to refuse what I demand of you.

You have 1 hour to comply.

And no conferring with your crew to wiggle out of this, mind you. That’s not cool.

I didn’t care enough to post about this week’s Disco and still don’t. May not next week either.

If you think what Disney has done with Star Wars movies is unforgivable, their abuse of the good will inherent to the brand with their theme parks is arguably worse.

Here’s a ridiculously long but surprisingly watchable and well-constructed explanation of what the Galactic Starcruiser was and why it failed. I found this fascinating.

Jenny Nicholson is amazing. I watched the first part of the video yesterday and I’ll finish it over the next week or so. Her reviews are always so thorough and thought-out, she doesn’t just trash things, every criticism is well-explained with suggestions for how things could be improved—I really recommend her videos on the failed “Evermore” theme park and on the rejected script for Star Wars Episode IX.
